# EE4845 Fundamentals of radar and applications

**Topics:** Introduction to microwave systems, radar and remote sensing applications; the foundation for further courses on radar and remote sensing

The aim of this course is to introduce students to microwave wireless systems in general and to the radar and microwave remote sensing in particular. The course will lay foundations for further courses on radar and remote sensing. At the same time, the course supports understanding of the physical layer in mobile and wireless communications.

The course consists of three major parts. In Part 1 the fundamental issues of radar (signal and target models, range, and velocity measurements with electromagnetic waves) are discussed. Part 2 of the course is focused on building an instrument (radar) that can sense objects remotely using microwaves. Attention is given to FMCW radar technology. In Part 3 on examples of automotive radar and atmospheric remote sensing applications the radar signal processing and information extraction from radar signals is studied. Discussion on radar and remote sensing general principles is complemented by the four practical exercises in work with real radar and in the processing of the real radar data, and by an analysis of practical systems designed and implemented at TU Delft.
