Hi everyone! My name is Amy (she/her), and I am a proud first-generation college student majoring in Communication with a minor in Community Engagement and Social Change. I was raised in Torrance, California, (shout-out Torrance!) for most of my life. I am so excited to share my experience navigating UCLA as a transfer and commuter student – two communities that have truly shaped my journey here.

A bit of a backstory – I spent my first two years at a community college. My biggest reason for starting there was to save money and explore my options without the pressure of tuition costs. Still, there was a part of me that occasionally wondered what my life would have looked like had I gone straight to a four-year university (but let’s be real – I was still figuring out what I wanted to do, and community college gave me the space to grow).

During those years, I filled my schedule with opportunities and new experiences, pushing myself to try new things. One of my proudest moments was starting an art club, where I wanted to create a space for students to express themselves creatively and connect with others through art.

The support I received from campus resources – from the financial aid office to tutoring service – made it easier for me to thrive. Being in an environment that encouraged growth without fear made me realize that this is the kind of place I wanted to continue being a part of.

When admission season finally came around, my heart was pounding. I chose UCLA not only for its academic excellence but because I saw a spirited and vibrant community that values students from all walks of life, including transfer and commuter students like myself.

Transitioning to UCLA was exciting yet nerve racking. Thankfully, the Transfer Student Center quickly became my second home where I spent time with my fellow transfer friends at their cozy study space and attended their fun social events! Today, as a current student staff member at the Transfer Student Center, I am honored to help create more opportunities for connection, empower transfer students, and foster a sense of community for others, just like I found for myself!

Being a commuter added another unique layer to my UCLA experience. While handling traffic and early commutes can be tough at times (I have a love/hate relationship with the 405 freeway), UCLA’s supportive community for commuter students made a significant difference. Whether it is hosting social events or offering resting pods for students to use before heading home, UCLA ensures that every student feels supported and welcomed. Furthermore, I have met some of the coolest commuter students, many of whom I now call my closest friends! 🙂

If someone were to ask me why I chose UCLA, I would especially highlight the tight-knit community that makes students feel supported and like they belong. Personally, transferring to and commuting at UCLA have taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of finding and building community wherever you are. UCLA is filled with communities that will embrace you, cheer you on, and remind you that you belong.

With Bruin pride,

Amy
