Introduction to technical art history, a field that combines methodologies drawn from the humanities and sciences to address art historical inquiries. Interdisciplinary study evidences how different ways of thinking can be combined to solve art historical problems. Exploration of how this kind of research is linked with contemporary debates, connecting past, present, and future. Definition of cultural heritage and arts, their importance and uses, and the origins of technical art history. Examination of research methods and theories from both art history and the sciences, highlighting their limitations and demonstrating the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in technical art history. Discussion of the present and future of such field, and its relation to a broader domain called heritage science, based on the intersection of the humanities and sciences. P/NP or letter grading.

Exploration of how the aesthetic, social, cultural, political, and philosophical meanings of Blackness and its representation in a global context have to come define visual and performing arts of the Black world from 19th century to present. Use of lectures, visual analysis, and case studies that combine art history, Black study, feminist study, and queer of color critique. Consideration of how and where Black art and aesthetics have become sites of contestation and platforms for questioning the limits and possibilities of race, gender, sexuality, diaspora, modernity, objecthood, the body, the human, futurity, and the practice of art history itself. Focus on transatlantic figures, artworks, themes, and movements that connect and traverse the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Topics include landscape painting, the built environment, and the memory of slavery; the Black avant-gardes; the influence of Black aesthetics in European and African modernisms; and the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in global art histories. Culture of Egypt transformed gradually after Muslim conquest in mid-7th century CE.\ According to material evidence such as ceramics, textiles, architectural forms, and building techniques, it is\ functionally impossible to separate pre-Islamic Christian Egypt from early Islamic Egypt. Although\ population may have become largely Muslim by 10th century, Egypt remained Coptic in many senses even\ to 14th century and retains sizeable Christian minority to present. Survey of archaeological remains and\ standing architecture of Egypt from 6th to 19th century, charting changes and continuities in material\ culture and shifts in human geography and land use. How did emerging media technologies, modern social inventions, and artistic\ innovations confront each other in context of Japan's 20th and 21st centuries? Study traces tensions\ between mass culture and avant-garde experimentation through empire, disaster, war, post-defeat\ reconstruction, economic miracle, post-bubble economic malaise, and more. Consideration of how artists'\ engagement with media forms and technologies not only responded but contributed to social, political,\ and cultural change within and beyond Japanese archipelago. Study delineates history of media and art\ from 1920s Mavo movement through post-Tohoku social turn in print media, photography, film, video, and\ other mass and new media forms. Study then approaches entanglement of art and media in Japan as\ related to, but distinct from, global media art history. Study also challenges ideas of technological\ universalism and determinism, while recognizing power of media to shape local social relations and global\ cultural currents.

East Asian art occupies privileged position within\ histories of non-Western modern art. Region includes colonial nation-states and colonized territories, that\ recognized institutional modern art as site for negotiating regional and international power relations.\ Following largely chronological approach from 19th to 21st centuries, introduction to history of modern\ and contemporary art in China, Japan, Korea, parts of Southeast Asia, and Taiwan through comparative\ global Asia lens. Investigation of preconceptions of modernity and art history revealed by modern and\ contemporary art framed as East Asian.

Exploration of evolution of contemporary Chinese art\ in various forms and media, from its emergence and diaspora to its current global presence. Study\ combines lecture and discussion.
AH 185 Undergraduate Seminar, Sec. 5 – The Long Seventh Century BC\ David Schneller\ R / 2:00 pm – 3:50 pm / Dodd Hall 275\ Seminar, three hours. Designed for juniors/seniors. This seminar explores Greek art of the late eighth and\ seventh century BC. We will study the works of art themselves in the context of developments in the wider\ Mediterranean sphere: the expansion of the Neo-Assyrian empire, Phoenician trade routes, and the\ establishment of emporia (ports of trade) and apoikiai (colonies) from the Black Sea to the Iberian Peninsula.\ We will also confront the historiography of seventh century art history from the earliest handbooks of Greek\ art to the most recent developments in the field. The seminar assumes some previous knowledge of ancient\ and/or Greek art history.
