NOTE: For all Asian languages and cultures majors, one year of high school in which the primary language of instruction was an Asian language may be used to satisfy the language requirement for admission purposes. Completion of two years of college level foreign language is strongly recommended.
Asian Humanities
Major preparation requirements
- At least one year of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino/Tagalog, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese
- One course from:
- Asian civilization
- Introduction to Buddhism
- Introduction to Asian religions
Asian Languages and Linguistics
Major preparation requirements
- At least one year of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino/Tagalog, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai or Vietnamese
- One civilization course on Asia or one introduction to Asian religions course
- One introduction to linguistic analysis course
Asian Religions
Major preparation requirements
- At least one year of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino/Tagalog, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese; or one year of Sanskrit
- One course in introduction to Buddhism or introduction to Asian religions
Chinese, Japanese, or Korean
Major preparation requirements
- At least one year of the selected language
- One accompanying civilization course
Required by end of spring before transfer
- One year of college level Asian language OR at least one year of high school in which the primary language of instruction was an Asian language. Completion of two years of college level foreign language is strongly preferred.
NOTE: High School foreign language classes will NOT satisfy major preparation requirements.
Southeast Asian Studies
Major preparation requirements
- At least one year of Filipino, Indonesian, Thai or Vietnamese
- One course in introduction to Southeast Asian studies
- One course from:
- Language and cultures of Asia
- Introduction to Buddhism/Zen Buddhism
- Introduction to Southeast Asian religions
- Modern Southeast Asian literature
