In a landmark redesign project that began in 2007, the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University renovated its home at 1 Washington Place to reflect the innovation that has defined the School since its inception in 1972. In the first renovation project at NYU to achieve LEED Gold certification, a total area of approximately 32,000 square feet was completely renovated in 2007 and 2008. LEED is the U.S. Green Buildings Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System™, and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.
Along with classrooms and faculty and administrative offices, the Gallatin space includes:
- A student lounge on the ground floor
- A multi-purpose theater and gallery space, flexibly designed to accommodate a variety of events with varying capacities of up to nearly 300 seats
- A student rehearsal and dance studio
- A student art studio
- A collaboration space, workshop, and maker-hub--746 STAC. Here, you’ll find making materials, white-board walls and tables, 3D printers, sewing machines, a large-screen digital monitor, and more.
- Spaces for the display of student and faculty artwork throughout the building
- Comfortable meeting areas throughout the building for the formal and informal interactions of students, faculty, and staff
- Student use lockers
- A dedicated Student Council office
Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts
The 108-seat Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts is used for a wide variety of events, including dramatic productions, dance performances, readings and film presentations. The theater space can also be used in conjunction with the adjoining gallery space to create a 285-seat multipurpose auditorium that accommodates a variety of larger-scale gatherings and signature School events, such as student orientations and the Albert Gallatin Lectures. The theater has a unique, custom-made retractable seating system that is on the cutting edge of theater design technologies, and the theater and the gallery space are separated by a retractable wall that can move to accommodate events of varying audience size. The gallery space is an area in which student and faculty artwork is displayed throughout the year.
Gallery Exhibits
The Gallatin Galleries opened in March 2009. The galleries are located in the Gallatin Building at 1 Washington Place. The main gallery is on the ground floor facing Washington Place, and other gallery spaces are located on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors.
It is the goal of the Gallatin Galleries to engage contemporary social issues through a broad range of contemporary art, documents, and events. For most of the academic year, there are exhibits of work by students, faculty, and alumni in the galleries.
746 STAC
746 STAC (Science Technology Arts + Creativity) is our collaboration space, workshop, and maker-hub located on the 7th Floor of Gallatin. Here, you’ll find miscellaneous making machinery and materials, white-board walls and tables, a large-screen digital monitor, and more. In addition to large equipment, we also have a variety of small hand tools, a constant supply of consumable materials, and lots of dry erase boards for ideation.
