  1. Completion of Coursework:

A degree can be awarded only to a student who has been continuously matriculated for each Fall and Spring term since entering the program. In order to be matriculated, students must either register for at least one credit-bearing course, or register for MAINT-GU 4747 Maintenance of Matriculation (0 credits). After completing the required 42 credits of coursework, DrPH students must request Maintenance of Matriculation and pay the related fee for each remaining fall and spring semester in the program (i.e., while working on the Advanced Applied Practice Experience, qualifying portfolio, and the dissertation).  Students on Maintenance of Matriculation retain access to their NYU email account, NYU facilities, etc. Students should complete the Maintenance of Matriculation Form each relevant fall or spring semester and submit it to the GPH Director of Registration and Academic Services.

  1. Advanced Applied Practical Experience:

An Advanced Applied Practice Experience (AAPE) is a required element of all CEPH-accredited DrPH programs. The AAPE helps students develop advanced practice and leadership skills, by completing at least one project that will make a meaningful contribution to a client organization and to advanced public health practice. The AAPE also has a secondary aim of helping DrPH students expand their professional portfolio, and consequently, career opportunities and growth.

  1. Assessment of Qualifying Portfolio:

The assessment of the student’s AAPE Qualifying Portfolio serves as the equivalent of a doctoral qualifying examination. The portfolio should demonstrate the student’s ability to address important public health issues and identify leadership approaches to advance public health practice. Passing the portfolio assessment serves to indicate that the student is a candidate qualified to advance to the dissertation proposal stage.

  1. Dissertation:

At GPH, DrPH candidates generate field-based products consistent with advanced practice designed to influence programs, policies or systems addressing public health. The products demonstrate synthesis of foundational and program-specific competencies. It may take many forms consistent with advanced, doctoral-level studies and university policies but must require, at a minimum, production of a high-quality written product.
