Take the time to review all the information below to ensure a smooth start to the new school year. If you have a question that is not answered here, please contact us.

New Student Checklist

Once you have been accepted, use this checklist to ensure a smooth transition to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering:

NYU Welcome: Familiarize yourself with the events connected to our Welcome experience and the key dates you should keep in mind as a new students
Orientation: Register for and attend Tandon's New Student Orientation which is held at the beginning of each fall and spring semester. Check back during the summer (fall semester) or winter (spring semester) for further details.
Tuition Deposit: Send in your tuition deposit in order to hold your spot in the class.
Major Confirmation (fall admits only ): Students will be allowed to go online to register for classes based on their major. During the month of May, students will receive a correspondence from the NYU School of Engineering listing their current major on file.
Health Insurance: Familiarize yourself with the NYU School of Engineering's student Health Insurance. All students taking 9 or more credits are automatically enrolled in the the NYU School of Engineering health insurance plan. If you are a domestic student you may opt-out of the program.
Immunization: Submit your proof of immunity documents.
Advanced Placement (AP) Scores: Students can obtain college credit at the NYU School of Engineering for their work on the Advanced Placement examinations (AP). In order for you to get college credit for your AP work, please request that the College Board send your Advanced Placement scores to NYU (CEEB: 2562).
International Baccalaureate (IB) Scores: Similar to AP scores, students can receive college credit based on their IB scores. Please speak with your high school or contact the International Baccalaureate service to send your scores to NYU.
Student Tech Guide: Explore the tech services extended to you as an NYU student.
Laptop Computer: The NYU School of Engineering requires all students to have a laptop.
E-mail address: You will be assigned an NYU ID number at the time of your acceptance to the school. Please keep this number, printed on your acceptance letter, in a safe place as you will need it during the various stages of the student enrollment process. You will also be provided an NYU email address which will be your official point of contact with the institute once the school year begins.
Activate your NYU Net ID: In order to take advantage of services available through NYU, an activated NetID is needed. Your NetID is not active however until you access the NYU Start page and activate it. You can activate your NetID at any time, from any Internet-connected computer, if you need assistance, please call the IT Service Desk at 212-998-3333.
ID Card: Upload a photo of yourself that meets the requirements listed online. Follow the steps on the website to send your photo to our team for approval. Once your photo is approved, we’ll notify you via your NYU email account and let you know where to pick up your NYU student ID card.
Buy books: Once your schedule is set, you can find the books the professors have selected for your courses and purchase the required and suggested texts via the NYU Main Bookstore. Please note that not all classes will have texts for sale via the NYU Bookstore — in this case, you will learn what text(s) are needed the first day of class.
Placement Exams: Take the math diagnostic exam and English-language writing placement exam. See details below.

Mathematics Diagnostic Exam

All incoming students (both first-year students and transfer students) MUST take the mathematics diagnostic exam, except for those who:

Qualify for advanced placement via AP Calculus, A-Level Maths, or IB Math Exam Scores.
Have completed an NYU CAS MATH-UA Calculus course with a C or above.
Have taken calculus course(s) at another university that have been evaluated and approved for transfer credit.

Official copies of AP scores must be sent to the admissions office as soon as possible in order to waive this requirement. Please refer to the Tandon Math Placement webpage for further information.

Students are allowed a maximum of 2 hours to complete the first attempt of the diagnostic exam. Students must have completed and received their results for their first attempt of diagnostic exam before registering for a second attempt exam. Consult the diagnostic webpage for more detailed information about the exam format and dates.

Reservation is required to sit for the exam. Schedule your exam. If you have any questions about the reservation process, please email the Mathematics department at soe.mathdiagnostic@nyu.edu.

Please note that if you are not eligible to receive transfer credit for your previous math coursework (Calculus I and higher), and want to demonstrate your competency in the subject matter, then you can pursue the Credit-by-Exam option available in the Mathematics department.

English-language Writing Placement Survey

If you are required to take the English-language writing placement survey, an online assessment, then you will be made aware of your status by email during the months preceding the enrollment period. Upon completing the survey, you will be notified of your writing class. You must finish the assessment before you can enroll in your writing class.

Registration and Scheduling

As an NYU School of Engineering undergraduate student, you will be responsible for scheduling yourself online via Albert, our student information system. Online tutorials will be released, before the registration period begins, to guide you through the process for the first time. First-year students beginning their studies in the fall should refer to the First-year Student Registration webpage for further information, while students starting in the spring should refer to the registration overview for Spring into Tandon students.

Academic Advisement Center: The Academic Advisement Center (AAC) will help you with all your advising questions, if you are a first-year student (i.e. new to college, pursuing your undergraduate degree) at the NYU School of Engineering.
Academic Departments: After your first year, or beginning immediately if you are a transfer student, a department-specific adviser will help you along the way with all your registration and academic needs.
Bills and Payment: After your initial the NYU School of Engineering bill which is sent to your home, all subsequent bills will be electronic. NYU School of Engineering does not send paper bills.
Bulletin: Familiarize yourself with the different entities within the NYU School of Engineering as well as academic policies, procedures and other guidelines to help you succeed.
Financial Aid: At the NYU School of Engineering we make every effort to assist you as you apply for the wide variety of financial aid, scholarships, grants, and loans available to undergraduate and graduate students. We offer a range of scholarships, work-study, and graduate assistantship programs that reduce education costs for students of need and merit.
NYU Classes: NYU Classes online learning system enables NYU faculty to use the Web to enhance classroom instruction. Instructors can use NYU Classes to create full-featured, online course environments for the members of their class to provide content sharing, collaborative capabilities, assignment and other assessment tools, as well as Gradebook functionality. Students can use NYU Classes to connect with their peers and stay on track with assignments and due dates with an aggregated calendar for all of their courses.
Records and Registration: This office aims to assist students with scheduling and registration issues, uphold academic policies, and provide professional and informed support to the School of Engineering community.
