Studying abroad can be a valuable part of your academic journey—but for students in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences (HMBS), the process requires careful planning. Due to strict program structures and accreditation requirements, not all courses are eligible for overseas credit, and prerequisite knowledge must often be matched precisely.

This page provides program-specific guidance to help you navigate the overseas study process, including important academic considerations, excluded courses, Expression of Interest (EOI) procedures, and recommended partner universities. Please review the relevant section for your program to ensure you meet UQ’s academic requirements while making the most of your global experience.

If you hold a provisional entry place into the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, it's important to plan your studies carefully to ensure you complete your first degree within the minimum time. Students with a provisional entry place should avoid going on exchange in their final semester, as there may be delays in receiving credit that could affect your eligibility to commence the MD program as scheduled.

Depending on your degree, you may have a limited number of off-list electives available. It’s important to plan your studies carefully to make the most of your options. Because programs are highly structured, it’s generally easier to gain approval for elective courses rather than core courses. Going on exchange in the last semester of study is not recommended for HMBS programs.

In semester 2 of the first year of your program, an exchange information session will be advertised and in the weeks following this, students are requested to email their interest to the School’s Director of Teaching and Learning (details provided in the information session). Interviews for interested students will be held in September/October and successful students notified by October 20 latest to allow them time to apply to Global Experiences.

## Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours)

**Semester-based Exchange**\
When planning an exchange in a Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours), it is important to save your elective credits and be aware of course availability. It is recommended you:

- Save first and second year electives for your exchange;
- If you don’t have enough elective credit saved, 2nd or 3rd-year psychology can sometimes be credited toward an “unspecified 3rd-year psychology course”;
- Be aware of course availability: many core psychology units are only offered in certain semesters at UQ. If you miss one, catching up later may delay your honours progression.

Courses not permitted to take on exchange:

- PSYC2063
- PSYC3034
- PSYC3042
- PSYC3010
