In today's digital age, it’s equally common to network from behind a screen than it is to meet someone in person. With the rise of virtual networking, opportunities to connect with professionals, peers, and potential employers are just a click away. However, mastering the art of virtual networking requires a different set of skills and etiquette than traditional face-to-face interactions.
The Dos of Virtual Networking:
- Level-up your online presence: Before you start networking virtually, it’s important that your online presence is professional and up-to-date. This includes your LinkedIn profile, personal website, or any other relevant social media accounts. When you google yourself are you happy with the results? - Choose the right platforms: Not all social media platforms are created equal for networking purposes. Research and select platforms that align with your career goals. LinkedIn is a popular choice for professional networking, but industry-specific forums and groups can also be valuable. Even Instagram and TikTok can be leveraged by those within the marketing or design spaces.
- Engage thoughtfully: When participating in virtual discussions or forums, engage thoughtfully by offering insightful comments and asking meaningful questions. Your contributions should demonstrate your knowledge and genuine interest in the topic.
- Build relationships, not just contacts: Networking isn't just about collecting connections or followers. Focus on building genuine relationships with people. Send personalised connection requests or messages, expressing your interest in connecting and discussing common interests. Try to bring as much value yourself as you expect to gain from them.

Consistently engage with your connections by sharing relevant content, participating in discussions, and checking in periodically. Even simply liking someone's post can go a long way.
- It's all about give and take: Networking is a two-way street. Be willing to help others as much as you seek assistance. When someone asks for advice or support, reciprocate when you can. This will strengthen your network and reputation.
