Each semester, The University of Queensland (UQ) hosts a special event to honour the achievements of its graduating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The 2024 End of Year Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sashing Ceremony was a beautiful celebration, bringing together graduates, families, friends, and the UQ Indigenous Engagement community. This event is a testament to the resilience, dedication, and triumph of these remarkable students.

The evening, hosted by UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit Director, Cassandra Diamond, was a vibrant acknowledgement of academic success and cultural pride. Each graduate was presented with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander sash by UQ Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Deborah Terry AC and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Indigenous Engagement, Professor Bronwyn Fredericks. The sash is a significant symbol of identity and achievement with the sashing ceremony celebrating both academic milestones and the unique journeys of each student.

As Torres Strait Islander man and Doctor of Medicine, T'kido Titasey said in his inspiring address, “Every single one of you has your own journey and your own story of the things that you had to overcome to achieve your individual successes."

T'Kido's words resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the power of perseverance and collective strength, offering an opportunity to reflect on the strong sense of community and shared support that characterises the university's Indigenous Engagement initiatives.

T'Kido also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of family, friends, and the UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit, “For me, there are at least twenty individuals who each deserve a part or piece of the graduation certificate," he said.

As the evening drew to a close, the celebratory atmosphere was matched by a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead. The graduating Class of 2024 is poised to make a profound impact in their chosen fields and communities. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to future generations, embodying the spirit of leadership, resilience, and cultural pride.
