Kyushu University has grown to be one of the most prestigious universities in Japan. The campus is located in the very area that first took up continental culture, and it is surrounded by the rich nature of the sea and mountains. Students develop in this rich cultural and natural environment, with excellent teachers, a cosmopolitan student body, and wide-ranging interaction with people in the local community and industry.

Kyushu University is located in Fukuoka on the Northern shore of Kyushu Island. Fukuoka has the most yakitori restaurants per capita of all major Japanese cities.

Full-time study load

14 tani / credits per semester at Kyushu University is equivalent to 8 UQ units.

Host university requirements

GPA\ You will need a minimum cumulative GPA of 5.25 to study at Kyushu University.\ Students with a lower GPA may still apply for Kyushu, as application documents are considered holistically.

Study Options\ You must choose one of four program options if choosing Kyushu. Further details are outlined in the Additional Academic Information section below.

Crosscheck the courses you found in the host course catalogue with the Credit Precedent Database to see if UQ credit has previously been granted. The database should be used as a general guide only. Few courses from each host will be in the database and many course precedents in the database may have expired. Note, the credit precedent database does not replace the host course catalogue. If a course is not listed in the CPD, you can still ask for it to be assessed on your study plan.

Courses offered by Kyushu University Business School (QBS) are open only to exchange students who are enrolled in QBS.

Additional academic information

Study Load Restrictions\ You must choose one of the four program options listed below.

  1. Japan in Today's World (JTW)
  2. A comprehensive package of learning experiences to help you understand Japanese culture and society today
  3. Study JTW core courses in Japanese Studies, plus students can also do Japanese Language Courses available from Beginner to Advanced (up to 3 Japanese language courses may be counted towards the JTW).
  4. Undergraduate students only
  5. No Japanese proficiency required
  6. One semester or year-long possible.
  7. Japanese Language and Culture Course (JLCC)
  8. This program is only available as a full-year exchange
  9. Gain a deeper understanding of Japanese society and culture with further opportunities to improve Japanese language skills for conducting research in the area of Japanese studies.
  10. Undergraduate students whose major is Japanese studies only
  11. Japanese proficiency of JLPT N2 or higher is required
  12. Study classes such as "Independent Study Project (ISP)", "Japanese Language and Linguistics" and "Japanese Culture and Society", plus electives
  13. School (not recommended)
  14. Undergraduate students only
  15. Courses taught in English: Very limited on offer through the School of Engineering, and School of Agriculture. It is unlikely you will be able to enrol in a full-time study load of courses taught in English. -

Accommodation

Kyushu University offers guranteed student housing in their dormatories. Please see rooms for international students.

Cost of living

Living costs are significantly lower in Fukuoka than in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka. Kyushu University provides some information on the estimated monthly living costs in Fukuoka and there are guides to managing your expenses while living in Japan.

Financial support

A range of funding for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.

Students studying at Kyushu University may be eligible for the JASSO Scholarship. Students are encouraged to find more information on these scholarships to determine their eligibility.

Insurance

Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ’s Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.

All foreign nationals who are granted permission to stay in Japan for 3 months or more must enrol in the National Health Insurance (NHI) system.

Organise your visa

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.

Kyushu University has visa and immigration information for incoming exchange students.

Contact the Consulate General of Japan for more visa information.

Travel risk levels

The University of Queensland cannot and does not allow students to travel to any country with a risk level of 3 (Reconsider your need to travel) or above, as assessed by the Australian Government.

If a country's risk level changes to 3 or above, experiences to that country are suspended until the risk level improves.
