The University of Sussex is a leading research-intensive university with a unique location. Sussex is ranked within the Top 20 UK universities and among the Top 200 worldwide.

The campus is situated in rolling parkland on the edge of Brighton. Though surrounded by the South Downs National Park, Sussex is just 10 minutes out of the city and is within easy reach of London.

## Full-time study load

60 credits at Sussex is equivalent to 8 UQ units.

## Host university requirements

**GPA**\
You will need a minimum cumulative GPA of 5 to study at Sussex.

**Study Options**\
Not applicable to this university. However, you will usually be expected to take the majority of courses (60%) within a single faculty.

Crosscheck the courses you found in the host course catalogue with the [Credit Precedent Database](http://creditprecedents.app.uq.edu.au/) to see if UQ credit has previously been granted. The database should be used as a general guide only. Few courses from each host will be in the database and many course precedents in the database may have expired. Note, the credit precedent database does not replace the host course catalogue. If a course is not listed in the CPD, you can still ask for it to be assessed on your study plan.

## Academic restrictions

**Study Load Restrictions**\
Students are unable to enrol in a full-time study load in the following disciplines, however, enrolment in one or two courses may be possible:

- Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering
- Social Work
- German / Italian / Japanese

**Course Restrictions**

- You should aim to enrol in mainly 2nd-year courses. 3rd-year courses are final year courses intended for students with a strong background in a relevant subject area.
- Single-degree law students cannot attend Sussex as most 2nd and 3rd-year law courses are full-year courses. Dual-degree law students can attend if they plan to study in both of their subject areas.
- The following Economics courses are full-year courses and therefore are not suitable for single-semester exchange students:
  - L1058
  - L1022
  - L1079
  - L1068
- Spaces in Creative Production and Creative Media courses are very limited and are only available to exchange students from a media-related degree at UQ.
- There are no 3rd year Drama courses available in Spring Term (UQ Semester 1).

## Accommodation

The University of Sussex provides a number of resources to help students find suitable accommodation on their [housing webpage](http://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/international-students/visiting-exchange-erasmus-students/accommodation). If you are studying at Sussex for the full academic year, you are guaranteed University-managed accommodation (which might be on- or off-campus) if you apply by the relevant deadline. Single-semester exchange students are not guaranteed accommodation.

## Cost of living

## Financial support

[A range of funding](https://employability.uq.edu.au/financial-support) for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.

Students studying at the University of Sussex can apply for a scholarship through [BUTEX](http://www.butex.ac.uk/). BUTEX offers a number of £500 scholarships to students studying on exchange at member institutions.

## Insurance

Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ’s Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.

## Organise your visa

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.

## Travel risk levels

The University of Queensland cannot and does not allow students to travel to any country with [a risk level of 3](http://smartraveller.gov.au/resources/pages/travel-advice-explained.aspx) (Reconsider your need to travel) or above, as assessed by the Australian Government.

If a country's risk level changes to 3 or above, experiences to that country are suspended until the risk level improves.
