You'll cry twice during your time in Mannheim. First when you arrive and you realise how ugly Mannheim is and second when you leave and you realise you've grown to love it!

Full-time study load

30 ECTS credits per semester at the University of Mannheim is equivalent to 8 UQ units.

Host university requirements

GPA\ You will need a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.5 to study at the University of Mannheim.

Study Options\ 50 per cent of your courses at the University of Mannheim must be from the School of Business. Further details are outlined in the Additional Academic Information section below.

Academic restrictions

Study Load Restrictions\ Students are unable to enrol in a full-time study load in the following disciplines, however, enrolment in one or two courses may be possible:

Course Restrictions\ Undergraduate students can take postgraduate courses if they are in the 4th year of studies.\ Postgraduate students can choose from undergraduate or postgraduate courses, as long as their credit requirements are met.

Additional academic information

Study Load Restrictions\ Students are unable to enrol in a full-time study load in the following disciplines, however, enrolment in one or two courses may be possible:

Study Option Details\ 50 per cent of your courses at the University of Mannheim must be from the School of Business. The remainder of your courses can be from the School of Economics, granted you meet any specific course prerequisites. If you wish to take courses from outside these schools, they must be listed in the university-wide electives list in the course catalogue. If you already have previous knowledge in one of the areas of study and would like to choose courses from their regular offer, you must contact the respective exchange coordinator.

Accommodation

There are multiple housing options available for exchange students at the University of Mannheim. The University's International Office provides a limited number of dorm rooms for exchange students and offers support in finding private rooms.

Cost of living

Comparative to other German towns, Mannheim is not an overly expensive place to live.

Mannheim University recommend that you should budget about EUR 780 to EUR 830 per month (made up of EUR 315-440 rent, about EUR 80 health insurance and the remaining money for groceries, clothing, etc.). Your expenses of course heavily depend on your lifestyle. Factor in some additional expenses during your first months in your new home as you will need to buy many new things, such as dishes or books. There is also a mandatory semester fee of EUR 110.30.

Study in Germany provide some general information regarding average living costs to help you plan your budget.

Financial support

A range of funding for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.

Students studying at Mannheim may be eligible for the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship, and may consult the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to find further information on scholarship possibilities or apply for any other financial aid they may be eligible for.

Insurance

Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ’s Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.

All students in Germany are required to have a health insurance policy. You will not be enrolled at the university without providing proof of your health insurance coverage. International exchange students who are not from an EU country may become exempted from compulsory health insurance. The conditions of this exemption will be checked by a representative of a public health insurance company in Mannheim.

Organise your visa

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.

Travel risk levels

The University of Queensland cannot and does not allow students to travel to any country with a risk level of 3 (Reconsider your need to travel) or above, as assessed by the Australian Government.

If a country's risk level changes to 3 or above, experiences to that country are suspended until the risk level improves.
