Established in 1858 as a small school of Western learning, Keio has a history as Japan’s very first private institution of higher learning. Keio has thrived under its founder’s motto of jitsugaku, or empirical science, as it continues to transform Japan as a modern nation through contributions to education, research, and medicine.
Keio is located in Tokyo and Kanagawa, one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. Living in Tokyo is a chance to experience Japan through its capital city with its many contrasting faces: unique customs, natural beauty, and futuristic technology. It has been ranked as the world’s best city to live in.

Full-time study load
14 credits per semester at Keio University is equivalent to 8 UQ units.
Host university requirements
GPA\ You will need a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.5 to study at Keio University.
Language\ Students wishing to take courses taught in Japanese (mainstream courses) with Keio domestic students will require Japanese proficiency of JLPT N2 or higher.
Study Options\ You must choose either the Keio International Program (KIP) or the Japanese Language Program (JLP). Further details are outlined in the Additional Academic Information section below.
Other Restrictions\ Course Flexibility: You must have a full study load of UQ electives (General Electives) if you wish to study in the JLP Language Program (JLP) and take courses from 'Courses Offered by Faculty / Graduate Schools' due to course profile access restrictions.

Keio has 3 different course catalogues: 1) International Center Courses (ICC), 2) 'Courses Offered by Faculty / Graduate Schools', and 3) JLP Language Program (JLP).
Course Profiles: Students will not have access to full course profiles for the JLP Language Program (JLP) and 'Courses Offered by Faculty / Graduate Schools' before the exchange semester commences. Full course-profiles BEFORE the exchange semester are only available for International Center Courses (ICC).
Crosscheck the courses you found in the host course catalogue with the Credit Precedent Database to see if UQ credit has previously been granted. The database should be used as a general guide only. Few courses from each host will be in the database and many course precedents in the database may have expired. Note, the credit precedent database does not replace the host course catalogue. If a course is not listed in the CPD, you can still ask for it to be assessed on your study plan.

Additional academic information
Study Option Details\ You must choose either the Keio International Program (KIP) or the Japanese Language Program (JLP).
- Keio International Program (KIP):
- A comprehensive program designed for exchange students who want to study about Japan and East/Southeast Asia in English and take Japanese language courses as well.
- You must take a minimum of 7 subjects per semester.
- You will take courses from any combination of International Center Courses, independent study, Japanese Language courses, and courses offered by Faculty/Graduate School (Japanese or English taught)
- Japanese Language Program (JLP):
- An Intensive program for students who wish to focus on Japanese language learning.
- You must take a minimum of 7 subject credits from the 'main courses (Japanese)' per semester and can choose additional electives from the English or Japanese taught courses. There are no maximum number of courses you are limited to take.
- Students will enrol in 14 tani/credits from a combination of courses ("subjects") in the Japanese Language Program (JLP) and Keio International Program (KIP) and/or mainstream undergraduate faculty courses.
- *Strongly recommended ONLY to students who are able to do a full-time load of General Electives due to restrictions regarding course profile access BEFORE the exchange semester starting.
Keio Tomodachi Program (Buddy)\ The Keio Tomodachi Program (Buddy) bring together exchange student with degree-seeking Keio students, who volunteer to introduce you to the Japanese way of life. As a participant in the Keio Tomodachi Program, you will be part of a buddy group that consists of approximately 2-3 buddies and 3-4 international students.

Accommodation
Keio assists students in arranging accommodation in Japan. Students are provided with a room at one of the student dormitories subsidised by Keio University. Exchange students from partner institutions, as well as Japanese Language Program students, should receive information on housing with Keio's acceptance documents.
Cost of living
Keio provides an estimate of monthly living costs students can expect to encounter to help you prepare for your exchange.
Financial support
A range of funding for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.
There are several funding opportunities for which students studying at Keio can apply. Students are encouraged to explore funding options to check their eligibility and the application procedure.
Insurance
Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ’s Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.
Full-time international students who will be studying in Japan for more than three months must join the National Health Insurance (NHI) system.

Organise your visa
It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.

Travel risk levels
The University of Queensland cannot and does not allow students to travel to any country with a risk level of 3 (Reconsider your need to travel) or above, as assessed by the Australian Government.
If a country's risk level changes to 3 or above, experiences to that country are suspended until the risk level improves.
