Our Academic Title Holders play a vital role in UQ’s mission to deliver excellence in education and research.
Without the contribution of our academic title holders, our breadth of programs would not be possible and our research would be significantly compromised.
We recognise Academic Title Holders’ contribution to UQ, and the leadership and commitment they deliver to their profession to improve health outcomes, through academic promotion. We want to support our Academic Title Holders’ progress in their clinical academic careers and look forward to continuing this important relationship between outstanding clinicians and UQ.
Eligibility
Academic titles are awarded to health professionals who make regular and significant contributions to UQ’s teaching, research and engagement program.
Academic titles for health professionals are awarded at levels consistent with those used for UQ-appointed staff. This is governed by the Academic Titles for Health Professionals Policy.
Benefits
As an Academic Title Holder, you are entitled to:
- use of facilities and resources of your UQ organisational unit as appropriate by arrangement with the head of the unit
- access to administrative support for applications for grant funding (depending on the conditions of the relevant funding body)
- internal research support
- access to other research and teaching support and resources, as negotiated with the head of your organisational unit
- access to UQ libraries and wifi internet
- a UQ email account
- a staff discount to UQ Sport.
Application
To understand the expectations of each level, follow the instructions to apply and read the relevant job listing. This covers the domains of teaching, research, supervision and researcher development, and citizenship and service.
If you’re new to UQ
If you don't have a current UQ account, apply for an academic title.
If you want to apply for Level D or E, you need to discuss your application with the relevant head of organisational unit first, essentially following the same pre-submission process as outlined below for current Academic Title Holders who are applying for Level D or E.
If you have a current UQ account
- Log in to Workday with your UQ username and password to submit an internal application. If you don’t know your UQ staff login credentials, see UQ IT support for help.
- Open the menu and go to ‘My Jobs Hub’.
- Click on ‘Browse Jobs’.
- In the ‘Job Family’ filter, select ‘Academic Title Holder’.
- Select the relevant job post, based on the level and organisational unit, and read through the requirements.
- Click ‘Apply’ to start your application.
Promotion
We are committed to the development and retention of high-performing Academic Title Holders through academic promotion. To recognise the contribution made to UQ and to support the professional development of health professionals, we encourage Academic Title Holders to apply for promotion.
The principles of academic promotion at UQ are underpinned by the policy and procedures outlined in the Criteria for Academic Performance Policy. The process of academic promotion for Academic Title Holders is streamlined and managed by the faculty.
Levels B and C
The promotion processes up to Level C are managed via Workday, whereby you generally specify the level of promotion you are applying for at the time of renewing your title.
Level D – Associate Professor
This process applies to:
- Academic Title Holders
- eligible UQ clinical academic health professional appointees, including conjoint or seconded staff, who hold a fractional appointment to 0.3 FTE.
If you want to apply for promotion to Associate Professor, you must discuss your intention with the head of your organisational unit (and your Head, Mayne Academy if you are from the Medical School).
Once the application is completed and accepted, you will be required to attend an interview with an ATH Level D Conferral and Promotions Committee.
The final application for promotion to Level D will need to include:
- a case for conferral (2–3 page cover letter) addressing the criteria and outlining your unique value and future strategic contribution to the University, your discipline, and the community
- a Curriculum Vitae in a specific format.

Level E – Professor
This process applies to:
- Academic Title Holders
- eligible UQ clinical academic health professional appointees, including conjoint or seconded staff, who hold a fractional appointment to 0.3 FTE.
There are 2 pathways for conferral to Professor:
- Apply for professorial promotion through the ATH clinical pathway, governed by the Academic Titles for Health Professionals Policy and Procedure, or
- If your career is more aligned with that of the traditional academic scholar, you can apply through the Promotion of Academic Staff Procedure.
If you want to apply for promotion to Professor, you must discuss your intention with your organisational unit head and clarify which pathway is most appropriate for you before completing the application forms. To prepare for this meeting, you should review the above policies to assess which pathway best relates to your achievement.
Once you have registered your interest to apply for promotion to Professor, the application is reviewed by the Associate Dean, Strategic Development, where it will be forwarded to the relevant organisational unit head (and Head, Mayne Academy for Medical School applicants) for further development.
Medical School applicants must also meet with the relevant Director, Clinical School and Dean, Medical School for a pre-submission meeting before submitting the final application.
The final application for promotion to Level E will need to include:
- a case for conferral (4 pages) addressing the criteria and outlining your unique value and future strategic contribution to the University, your discipline and the community
- a Curriculum Vitae in a specific format
- an informative commentary provided by the head of the relevant organisational unit and Mayne Academy Head, if appropriate.
After you submit your application you will be required to attend an interview with a University Promotions Committee.
