## Full-time study load

You will need a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.5 to study at Purdue.

**Study Options**\
You will be required to select one 'major' and it is recommended to take the majority of your coursework in one academic area.

Crosscheck the courses you found in the host course catalogue with the [Credit Precedent Database](http://creditprecedents.app.uq.edu.au/) to see if UQ credit has previously been granted. The database should be used as a general guide only. Few courses from each host will be in the database and many course precedents in the database may have expired. Note, the credit precedent database does not replace the host course catalogue. If a course is not listed in the CPD, you can still ask for it to be assessed on your study plan.

## Academic restrictions

**Study Load Restrictions**\
Students are unable to enrol in a full-time study load in the following disciplines, however, enrolment in one or two courses may be possible:

- Religion
- Chinese / Italian / Japanese / Korean / Russian
- Agriculture

**Course Restrictions**\
The following study fields have enrolment restrictions recommendations:

- **Computer Science:** It is strongly recommended students take no more than 12 Purdue credits in computer science due to the workload.
- **Economics:** It is recommended students find economics courses through the College of Liberal Arts. The School of Business is not open to exchange students. Whilst some individual economics courses offered through the business school may be open to exchange students, they are typically over subscribed and extremely hard to get into.
- **Horticulture:** Courses/program in horticulture (HORT) is highly ranked and competitive. Prerequisites will be checked thoroughly.
- **Purdue Polytechnic:** Students are not permitted to take courses within Purdue Polytechnic while also taking courses of a similar study field in other Purdue colleges.

Courses in the following areas tend to be oversubscribed. Students should have flexiblity in which courses within these majors they take:

- Computer Science
- Engineering

**Disciplines/Faculties Restrictions**\
The following, among others, are not open to exchange students:

- MBA program
- Mitch Daniels School of Business
- Postgraduate courses

## Additional academic information

**Study Option Details**\
You must choose one admission faculty from the available faculties at Purdue and you will likely be required to take the majority of courses (60%) within the chosen faculty.

- **Engineering:** While possible to select courses across multiple schools within the College of Engineering (CoE), it is recommended to select all courses from a single school

## Accommodation

Exchange students can apply to stay in Purdue's [on-campus residences](https://www.housing.purdue.edu/). Places are not guaranteed, especially during the fall semester, but students who apply by the deadline will usually be allocated a room. Additionally, Purdue provides guidance and support for students [looking to live off-campus](https://www.purdue.edu/odos/offcampus/).

## Cost of living

Purdue's [Exchange Student Handbook](https://www.studyabroad.purdue.edu/resource/preparing.pdf) provides a breakdown of average living costs which students can expect to encounter while on exchange in West Lafayette.

## Additional Mandatory fees

Purdue University does **not** have any additional mandatory fees for exchange students.

## Financial support

[A range of funding](https://employability.uq.edu.au/financial-support) for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.

## Insurance

Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ’s Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.

All exchange students studying at Purdue are required to maintain adequate health coverage throughout the duration of their exchange. Information regarding the [Purdue Student Health Insurance Service](https://www.purdue.edu/push/insurance/index.html), including costs and benefits, can be found on Purdue's website.

Exchange students **may** be eligible to waive the Health Insurance Plan if they have additional cover that meets Purdue University’s minimum waiver requirements. UQ’s Corporate Travel Insurance has previously met the minimum waiver requirements for Purdue University’s Student Health Insurance. However, waiver eligibility is assessed by the host university and is **not** guaranteed as requirements are subject to change.

**Before** purchasing an additional policy, students should confirm that the policy meets Purdue University’s minimum waiver requirements.

A waiver is not automatic. Do not assume that a waiver will be approved or that you will receive a waiver based on the experience of a friend from UQ who studied at the same institution on exchange.

## Organise your visa

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.

## Travel risk levels

The University of Queensland cannot and does not allow students to travel to any country with [a risk level of 3](http://smartraveller.gov.au/resources/pages/travel-advice-explained.aspx) (Reconsider your need to travel) or above, as assessed by the Australian Government.

If a country's risk level changes to 3 or above, experiences to that country are suspended until the risk level improves.
