# Kickstart for Jarjums thanks to InspireU

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit (ATSISU) Outreach & Engagement (O&E) Officer, Jackson Paton recently hosted 9 students in Years 7 and 8 from across South-East Queensland for an InspireU Kickstart [Tertiary Experience Day (TED)](https://study.uq.edu.au/information-resources/aboriginal-torres-strait-islander-students/tertiary-experience-day).

The students participated in hands-on activities and presentations in Molecular Science, Architecture, Engineering, VR, Robotics, and AI.

Everyone enjoyed the day and walked away with a much better understanding of university life and the many opportunities available to them in the future.

The InspireU Kickstart Initiative commenced in 2023 aiming to better inform Years 7-9 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students' decisions about university later on.  Not only is it a wonderful opportunity for students to become familiar with the St Lucia Campus at The University of Queensland, but it’s also a great way for young high school students to connect with staff and facilitators earlier, setting the foundations for long-term relationships at UQ.

As ATSISU O&E Senior Team Leader, Robyn Donnelly said, “Education is key to changing lives and we want these students to understand early on in their schooling that university is a possibility for them and that the Outreach and Engagement Team can assist them in making their dreams a reality.”
