Accommodation

Similar to the other European metropolises, affordable housing in the Helsinki region is limited and competitive. The spring term is easier when it comes of finding accommodation. Therefore it is highly recommended that exchange students favour the spring term if possible.

The university cannot accommodate all students, so students should also search for private accommodation. Aalto University provides guidance to incoming students to help find suitable housing while studying in Helsinki.

Cost of living

The University of Aalto provides practical information about budgeting and the cost of living in Helsinki.

Financial support

A range of funding for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.

Aalto University School of Business is offering 2 x €1,000 scholarships to UQ students who are accepted for a full semester exchange during the 2022-23 academic year.

Insurance

Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ’s Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

For more information, read the Student Travel Insurance Policy Summary on UQ’s Travel Insurance web page (login required).

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.

Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries are required to have valid health insurance already at the time when applying for the residence permit for Finland. This is a compulsory requirement for obtaining a residence permit for studies lasting more the three months. Aalto does not provide health insurance for foreign students, however, does have information to help students organise suitable insurance.

Organise your visa

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for the country where you will be studying. As the Global Experiences team is not a visa-issuing authority we cannot provide visa advice.

Contact the Embassy of Finland for visa and immigration information.

Travel risk levels

The University of Queensland cannot and does not allow students to travel to any country with a risk level of 3 (Reconsider your need to travel) or above, as assessed by the Australian Government.

If a country's risk level changes to 3 or above, experiences to that country are suspended until the risk level improves.

Find out the risk level and travel advice, and sign up to receive updates for your host country on the Smartraveller website.
