Shanghai, September 30, 2024 – At the 24th China International Industry Fair (CIIF) held at Shanghai’s National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC), international attendees gained a firsthand perspective of China’s latest advancements in technology and industry. Among these attendees was Mohammad Shahir Sharifi, a PhD student from Afghanistan studying at the School of Media and Communication, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Invited by the Shanghai Municipal News Office, Sharifi explored the fair and participated in discussions aimed at fostering international understanding.

The CIIF, running from September 24 to 28, featured over 2,600 exhibitors from 28 countries. With themed areas spanning automation, robotics, new energy, and industrial accessories, the exhibition highlighted China’s commitment to advancing productivity and digital innovation. The fair attracted an impressive 50,000 visitors on its first day alone and was expected to draw over 200,000 visitors by its conclusion. Covering a vast 280,000 square meters, CIIF 2024 showcased China’s growing influence in high-tech industries under the theme “Advanced Productivity & Digital Empowerment.”

At a forum organized by CIFF, Sharifi joined scholars, business leaders, social media influencers, and cultural figures to discuss the fair’s global significance. During the forum, he shared his perspective on the importance of expos in promoting cross-cultural exchange. “Expos like CIIF allow for the meaningful exchange of ideas, showcasing not only technological progress but also a shared vision of global cooperation,” said Sharifi.

Sharifi highlighted China's growth in technological development, driven by a focus on three elements: cooperation, innovation, and a people-first approach. Reflecting on the transformation of the “Made in China” label, he observed, “China has successfully rebranded ‘Made in China’ into a positive marker of quality, innovation, and reliability.” From his academic viewpoint in communication studies, Sharifi applauded China’s efforts in branding communication, emphasizing how technology can serve as a bridge for cultural understanding and global collaboration.

The CIIF experience not only broadens the academic and cultural horizons of SJTU’s international students but also reinforces the university’s commitment to fostering global perspectives. For students like Sharifi, such events offer valuable insights into China’s role in global innovation and cooperation—key themes that SJTU aims to impart to its diverse and forward-thinking community.
