He is Chew Sien Ping, a Malaysian Chinese international student who has achieved outstanding accomplishments while pursuing a Master’s degree in Ophthalmology at the School of Medicine. Academically, he has received multiple national-level honors, including the Chinese Government Scholarship and the China–ASEAN Elite Scholarship. Focusing on molecular imaging in ophthalmology, he has published seven academic papers, including one in a Cell sub-journal. As the President of the Malaysian International Medical Association (Headquarters) and the founder of its China Chapter, he successfully established an international medical exchange platform spanning 11 countries. Under his leadership, the public welfare service team “Protecting Young Eyes”—for which he served as the first international student leader at Shanghai Jiao Tong University—won the National Gold Award at the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition, and also secured gold awards in multiple innovation competitions such as the “Challenge Cup.” With medicine as his vessel and innovation as his oar, and driven by a deep identification with Chinese culture, he gives back what he has learned to this land, tells rural stories across China, and is committed to contributing to the cause of human health.

As an overseas Chinese, he has been deeply affected by the prevalence of childhood eye diseases in his hometown, Xinlai Village, Malaysia, where shortages of medical resources mean that complex eye conditions are often equated with “incurable diseases.” During his studies in Shanghai, he discovered that hospitals there already have highly mature diagnostic and treatment systems for such conditions, with very favorable prognoses. This inspired him to bring China’s advanced prevention and treatment experience to more remote regions, so that complex eye diseases would no longer remain “unsolvable” on a global scale. Today, as a graduate student in ophthalmology at Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chew Sien Ping is honored to study under Academician Fan Xianqun, Dean of the School of Medicine. With his mentor’s encouragement and support, Chew founded the “Protecting Young Eyes” public welfare service team, proposing an entirely new prevention and treatment framework for complex childhood eye diseases in rural areas.

Chew Sien Ping and his team stood out in the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition (2024), Red Tourism Track, becoming the first team led by an international student to win a National Gold Award. However, along the journey of innovation and entrepreneurship, Chew and his team encountered the stark contrast between ideals and reality. As student entrepreneurs, they faced challenges in earning public trust, and their project progressed amid cycles of construction and revision. Whenever he felt discouraged, Chew would recall the predecessors who, in times of hardship, forged paths of hope through firm belief and unyielding perseverance. This spirit has become his most precious inner asset, inspiring him to move forward, lead his team across the gap between ideals and reality, and continue striving toward their public welfare mission.

Addressing the key challenges in preventing and treating complex eye diseases among rural children—late detection, slow response, and difficulty in diagnosis and treatment—Chew Sien Ping led a group of volunteers to investigate the root causes and implement three major innovative solutions. To tackle late detection, the team built a multimodal database of complex pediatric eye diseases and established a multi-temporal dynamic early-screening system, strengthening screening for preschool children aged 0 to 6. To improve response speed, they centered on Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital and collaborated with over 300 medical consortium institutions to create a telemedicine consultation platform, simultaneously enabling rural physicians to provide treatment and receive training. In terms of diagnosis and treatment, the team established the Youth Innovation Studio, achieving technological breakthroughs across molecular, pathological, and imaging dimensions, overcoming current clinical bottlenecks, supporting personalized and precise treatment plans, and improving the efficiency of medical resource utilization. Over the years, the team has traveled upstream along the Yangtze River, forming deep partnerships with 106 rural communities, and has also established collaborations with multiple countries in South and Southeast Asia, sharing China’s experience and bringing light, hope, and a future to countless children.

Yet his journey of innovation has not stopped there. The project team has participated in numerous innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, achieving remarkable results across the board. They won the Gold Award and the Entrepreneurial New Seed Award at the Wujiaochang Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and were appointed as university representatives for the initiative. They also secured First Prize, the Outstanding Organization Award, and the Rural Revitalization Excellence Award at the Yangtze River Delta “Youth Innovation · Military Innovation · Rural Innovation” Competition, as well as a Gold Award at the Hangzhou College Students’ Science and Technology Innovation Competition and the Yangtze River Delta Science and Technology Innovation Competition. To tell China’s story well, Chew also represented his team at the National Youth Federation Spring Festival event, showcasing their achievements. Inspired by these innovation and entrepreneurship experiences, he resolved to establish “IntelVision Medical”. This is not merely a project, but a dream to bring revolutionary change to ophthalmology through technology. By uniting diverse wisdom and resources, the team is committed to opening new directions for innovative research in ophthalmology, aspiring to bring light to more people and illuminate their lives.
