Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek delivers the 3rd Lecture Series at Zhiyuan College, guiding youth in exploring a three-dimensional world of Physics

2026-02-03 105

From January 19 to 23, 2026, Zhiyuan College once again had the honor of hosting Nobel Laureate in Physics and Chief Scientist of the Li Zhengdao Institute, Professor Frank Wilczek, for his highly anticipated third lecture series, "Wilczek’s Lectures." Following his previous engagements in November 2023 and January 2025, Professor Wilczek's return attracted approximately 200 outstanding students from physics top-tier training programs across the nation, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of academic exchange and exploration.

The intensive course was structured around five core themes: "Gravitational Wave Detection," "Quantum States of Radiation," "Observing Radiation States," "Sources and Signals," and "Overflow or Additional." With his profound expertise and engaging pedagogy, Professor Wilczek masterfully connected cutting-edge theory with research practice, guiding students through a systematic understanding of fundamental questions and methodological evolution in these pivotal fields.

The academic journey was further enriched by three distinguished National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars: Professor He Feng, Executive Deputy Dean of Zhiyuan College; Professor Wang Wei, Physics Program Director of Zhiyuan College; and Professor Shen Juntai from the School of Physics and Astronomy delivered insightful presentations. They introduced their respective departments' development visions and research landscapes, covering specialized topics such as "Ultra-Short and Ultra-Intense Laser Physics," "From Particle Physics to Lattice QCD," and "A Stroll Through the Cosmic Sky."

Transcending conventional lecture formats, this series uniquely integrated three key dimensions—"Theory-Practice," "Microcosm-Macrocosm," and "Science-Humanities"—throughout the entire research chain. A meticulously designed itinerary provided students with immersive experiences to perceive the dynamic extension and living practice of theoretical physics in modern science.

The program commenced with an ice-breaking session, quickly building camaraderie among participants and establishing an open, collaborative environment for deep discussions. Days two and three featured immersive lab tours and site visits. Students explored key laboratories at the School of Physics and Astronomy, including the "Chongming 100 TW Laser Acceleration and Radiation Platform," artificial structure and quantum control labs, and a dark matter detection facility, witnessing firsthand how theoretical frontiers are pursued with advanced experimental platforms. Visits to the Li Zhengdao Institute and the Zhangjiang High-Level Research Institute offered deep dives into quantum science, particle physics, and the planning of major national scientific installations.

On the fourth day, the focus shifted to heritage and inspiration. A visit to the SJTU History Museum illuminated the century-old development trajectory of physics at the university, while the Li Zhengdao Library offered profound insights into the exploration spirit and humanistic values behind theoretical physics through the academic life of the great scientist. The day culminated in a memorable "Stargazing Night," where students observed classic winter constellations, blending scientific wonder with poetic reflection.

This iteration of "Wilczek’s Lectures" successfully established a high-level academic platform through the generous instruction of a top scholar and the deep integration of multidimensional research scenarios. It planted the seeds of curiosity for physics frontiers in the minds of young participants. Zhiyuan College remains committed to its mission of cultivating top-notch innovative talents, dedicated to fostering an educational ecosystem that bridges academia and practice, science and humanities, continuously fueling the development of future scientific leaders.

Special Thanks to: The Li Zhengdao Institute, School of Physics and Astronomy, Wilczek Quantum Center, MOE Key Laboratory of Artificial Structures and Quantum Control, Laser Plasma Laboratory, Particle and Nuclear Physics Laboratory, Zhangjiang High-Level Research Institute, SJTU History Museum, Li Zhengdao Library, and Guangqi Observatory at SJTU.
