Regulations and Process of Doctoral Dissertation Evaluation

1.Modes of Evaluation

Doctoral Dissertation Evaluation ordinarily conducts three months earlier than Thesis Defense. Both International Review and Domestic Review are available for students. The students who pass the evaluation are qualified to apply Thesis Defense.

(1)Domestic Review

Team of domestic review should be composed by three discipline-related experts: one professor (or associate professor obtained doctoral degree) invited from related department of SJTU for dissertation evaluation, and two professors invited from institutes outside of the university for anonymous assessment.

(2)International Review

w The application of international review should be submitted by the student and his supervisor after one year of the start of doctoral dissertation.

w The dissertation review committee of school or the dean in charge of degree affairs is responsible for the application review.

w The Graduate School shall archive the application materials for record.

w Dissertation for international review is allowed to be written in English, exempt the SJTU anonymous assessment, but is obligated to attend the international thesis defense.

2.Time of Evaluation

The feedback of dissertation evaluation generally comes out within two months after submitting the application. The student who didn’t receive the feedback after two months (except vacations) is allowed to apply for thesis defense with the permission of his supervisor, and apply for doctoral degree after passing the thesis defense. If the feedback is released after thesis defense but indicates objection, the student is still permitted to revise and improve the dissertation according to the suggestions of feedback.

3.Objection Handling

(1)Reconsideration: The student who failed in Doctoral Dissertation Evaluation should apply and pass the reconsideration before graduation. The reconsideration should be no more than twice and conducted by the original evaluation team. Fee of reconsideration should be paid by students themselves. The students who didn’t apply in time or failed twice are not allowed to apply for thesis defense and degree.

(2)Appeal: The students who don’t agree with the evaluation results have the right to appeal to the Degree Evaluation Committee of related department within ten workdays.

Process of appeal:

a. The student submits the application to supervisor and department;

b. The supervisor and department review the application;

c. After the department review, Degree Affair Office of Graduate School organizes two experts outside of the university to review the dissertation of applicant;

d. After the feedback released, the degree evaluation committee of department shall organize no less than three experts to review the feedback as well as the reason of appeal. The review result will be sent to the degree evaluation committees of department, of discipline, and of university for final decision. The decision will be notified to the applicant.
