On June 1, 2025, the inaugural meeting of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Norway Alumni Association was held in Trondheim. Secretary of the University Party Committee Yang Zhenbin and nearly 30 Norway-based alumni gathered to reflect on their shared origins and discuss future development. Representatives from the university’s International Cooperation and Exchange Office, Alumni Association Office, School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, the SJTU UK Alumni Association, and the SJTU Denmark Alumni Association attended the meeting and participated in the exchange.

Yu Zhaolong, representative of the preparatory committee of the Norway Alumni Association, gave a briefing on the establishment process. Zhang Liqiang, Deputy Director of the SJTU Alumni Association Office, announced the list of the first Council members: Chen Qiang was appointed President, while Jiao Linlin and Yu Zhaolong were appointed Secretaries-General. Yang Zhenbin presented appointment certificates and the association flag to the newly elected council members. Chen Qiang expressed his gratitude to the alma mater for its long-standing care and support for alumni in Norway. He stated that he would unite and lead all members of the Norway Alumni Association to actively maintain ties with the university and contribute to exchanges and cooperation between the university and Norway as well as the broader Nordic region. Liu Xiaomei, Executive Vice President of the SJTU UK Alumni Association, extended congratulations on behalf of fellow alumni associations and shared valuable experiences. She expressed her hope to work hand in hand with the Norway Alumni Association and others to strengthen connections with overseas alumni and support the university's development in meaningful ways.

Zhang Liqiang provided an overview of alumni work, covering core philosophies, development trajectory, organizational structure, signature events, tailored services, and preparations for the university’s 130th anniversary. Professor Fu Shixiao, Dean of the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, introduced the school’s progress in academic development, faculty team building, talent cultivation, scientific research, and internationalization. Alumni Ye Naiquan (Bachelor’s Class of 1992, Master’s Class of 1998) and Shao Yanlin (Master’s Class of 2006) delivered keynote sharing sessions. They reflected on their experiences studying at SJTU and their personal and professional growth overseas, encouraging younger alumni to stay grounded and forge ahead with determination on their new paths.

On behalf of the university, Yang Zhenbin extended warm congratulations on the establishment of the Norway Alumni Association and expressed heartfelt thanks for the alumni’s efforts and contributions in fostering cooperation and exchange between SJTU and the Norwegian region. He highlighted the university’s history and recent achievements and expressed hope that the Norway Alumni Association will continue to strengthen its organizational development, support alumni growth, promote interdisciplinary exchange, and contribute to the university’s advancement. He called on all SJTU members to unite and help expand the university’s global presence. During the event, Yang Zhenbin officially presented Chen Qiang with the plaque for the "SJTU Alumni Home (Norway)."

The Norway Alumni Association is the 100th alumni organization established by the alma mater and the 10th in Europe. It will serve as a vital bridge connecting the university with Norway, promoting international collaboration, alumni engagement, and community-building efforts. It aims to unite and empower SJTU alumni across Norway to grow together. During the European visit, the Alumni Association Office delegation traveled to Amsterdam (Netherlands), Oslo (Norway), and Copenhagen (Denmark), meeting with alumni working or studying at companies such as Aker Solutions, DNV (DNV-Det Norske Veritas), ALK, as well as institutions including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Copenhagen, and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). These visits offered a comprehensive understanding of alumni’s professional experiences and personal journeys, while also fostering in-depth discussions on future collaboration, organizational development, and enhanced alumni services.
