On the afternoon of November 24, 2025, President Ding Kuiling of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) met with Maysa Furlan, President of São Paulo State University (UNESP), and her delegation at the Minhang Campus. Vice President Liu Weidong also attended the meeting.
President Ding warmly welcomed President Maysa Furlan and her delegation. He emphasized that SJTU attaches great importance to its partnership with Brazil’s top universities, and that China and Brazil have achieved fruitful results in cooperation in education and science and technology. President Ding expressed the hope that the two universities will launch comprehensive collaboration in areas such as student exchange and joint degree programs, and continue to expand the scope of cooperation.
President Maysa Furlan stated that UNESP regards cooperation with Chinese universities as a strategic priority for its development. She looks forward to strengthening collaboration with SJTU in engineering, sustainable development, and other areas of shared interest, exploring multiple cooperation models including student mobility, seed funding, and joint training, and building a long-term and stable partnership. She noted that SJTU’s outstanding achievements in scientific research align strongly with UNESP’s academic strengths, laying a solid foundation for deep and lasting collaboration.
Heads from the SJTU Global College and School of Humanities and other relevant units attended the meeting. During the visit, the delegation from UNESP also toured the SJTU Institute of Medical Robotics.
São Paulo State University (Portuguese: Universidade Estadual Paulista, English: São Paulo State University, abbreviated as UNESP), founded in 1976, is one of the largest comprehensive research universities in Brazil. In the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), it ranked 2nd in Brazil and 5th in Latin America. It is the first Brazilian university to establish a Confucius Institute. As of 2024, the university has 39,000 undergraduate students and 15,000 graduate students. Committed to integrating scientific, technological, economic, cultural, and social development resources, UNESP established Latin America’s first jointly-developed Chinese Studies program in 2024.
