If you intend to do only interships abroad, the **Erasmus Praktikum** (s. below) would be the more appropriate.

Study abroad for between three and 12 months are eligible for subsidy. A grant of approximately €150,- per month can be secured for the same amount of time. Partner universities may provide dormitory rooms or other inexpensive accommodation. Credit transfer may be arranged upon application.

## ERASMUS+

ERASMUS was launched by the European Union in 1987. All EU member states as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Turkey participate in the programme. The **ERASMUS+** funding line offers you:\
\

- Free tuition fees at the host university
- Monthly financial support
- Online Linguistic Support
- Credit transfer at the LMU
- Support from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy and the partner university

In order to receive the full amount of financial support, you must complete **at least 10 ECTS-Credits** during your stay at the partner university.

The Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy maintains a large number of cooperations with partner universities abroad.

The current ERASMUS **[partner universities of the respective department](https://www.cup.lmu.de/en/study/student-mobility/outgoings/partner-universities-erasmus.html)** can be found here.\
A stay/exchange is only possible in these universities.

**Application steps**

- 1. Fill out the [online application form](https://lmu.moveon4.de/form/5813384083fb966347722df7/deu "Link opens in a new window") and upload all required documents in the application portal. **The Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy does not require any further documents beyond this.**
- 2. Send all application documents in a PDF file to either:*\*Pharmacy: [studpharma@cup.uni-muenchen.de](mailto:studpharma@cup.uni-muenchen.de)\
  Chemistry/Biochemistry: [thomas.engel@lmu.de](mailto:thomas.engel@lmu.de)\
  You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt and a few weeks later an acceptance or rejection as well as information on the further procedure.

**Application deadline: 31 January** for a stay in the following academic year. Later applications are not accepted. However, you can apply for the[ERASMUS+ postponement procedure](https://www.lmu.de/de/workspace-fuer-studierende/auslandserfahrung-sammeln/auslandsstudium/austauschprogramme/erasmus/index.html#st_img_text__master_1 "Link opens in a new window") (available only in German).

[Learning Agreement](#accordionItem-1291419-3)

After successful application, you will receive access to your Online Learning Agreement from the LMU International Office (end of April / beginning of May) and detailed instructions on how to complete the document.\
**In the online learning agreement, you specify which courses you would like to attend at the partner university and which courses you would like to receive credit for at LMU.\** It is possible to make changes to the Learning Agreement during the course of your stay. The submission of the Learning Agreement is one of the basic conditions for the payment of the ERASMUS+ scholarship.

**We recoomend the following procedure:**

- **Step 1**: Search the course catalogue of the partner university and choose the courses you want to attend. If the course catalogue for the upcoming term is not yet available, choose the courses acoording to the course catalogue of the current or previous semesters. It is also possible to attend courses you do not want to recieve credits for your studies at LMU.
- **Step 2**: Discuss the list of desired courses with your [CUP contact](https://www.cup.lmu.de/en/study/student-mobility/ansprechpersonen/). Please include weblinks to the course description of each course. Only on the basis these course descriptions we can estimate, if the courses are recognizable for your physics degree program at LMU.
- **Step 3**: We will check your suggestions and ask you to make adjustments if necessary.
- **Step 4**: After our final feedback, you will complete the Online Learning Agreement (Tables A and B).
- **Step 5**: You will be informed about the further procedure via the online platform. Ideally, the Online Learning Agreement can be confirmed by us and by the partner university. Otherwise, you will receive instructions for any necessary changes.

Courses that are listed in your Learning Agreement as well as courses that are comparable in content and level to the corresponding courses offered by the Faculty of Physics can be recognised as academic credits.

To do this, you must submit the following documents to the ***[CUP-contact person](https://www.cup.lmu.de/en/study/student-mobility/ansprechpersonen/)*** after your return to LMU.\
\

- the transcript of records from the foreign university (only signed and sealed or electronically verifiable transcripts can be accepted),
- any certificates from passed courses abroad
- a copy of your Learning Agreement

Your documents will be checked by the Examination Office. This can take up to 4 weeks.

## LMUexchange

With the help of the LMUexchange program, you can study at partner universities in North and South America, Asia, Russia or Australia and many other regions.\
\
LMU offers exchange places at over 150 non-European partner universities worldwide. As part of the LMUexchange program, you will be free of tuition fees at the partner university.\
\

**Applications are handled directly to the International Office of the LMU.** \

Unlike ERASMUS+, **no additional application to the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy is required**!

However, we recommend that you discuss the **Learning Agreement with the departments of the faculty**. In this way, you can make a binding agreement in advance of your stay abroad on the crediting of study achievements for your physics studies at LMU.

## Other exchange programs

[The Erasmus+ Traineeship Program](#accordionItem-1295725-0)

Within the framework of ERASMUS+, funding for internships is also possible.\
The application is made through the **LMU Career Service**. Unlike ERASMUS+ study program, you do not need to submit an additional application to the Faculty of Physics. However, for the Learning Agreement for Traineeships you need a signature of the examination office or the program counseling service (see ***program counseling & contact information***). **[[Link]]**

[Swiss-European Mobility Program (SEMP)](#accordionItem-1295725-1)

As Switzerland cannot currently officially participate in the Erasmus program, the [Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP)](https://www.lmu.de/de/workspace-fuer-studierende/auslandserfahrung-sammeln/auslandsstudium/austauschprogramme/swiss-european-mobility-programme/index.html "Link opens in a new window") was created. The SEMP is very similar to the Erasmus program. The main difference to Erasmus+ is that the scholarships are provided by the Swiss side.

The application procedure for a place at a Swiss partner university is integrated into the application procedure for a place under the Erasmus program.

You apply to LMU in the normal way via the Erasmus application procedure and list your preferred Swiss universities.

[How can I find a suitable partner university?](#accordionItem-1305407-1)

You can find the Erasmus partner universities of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy in the LMU [MoveOn-Datenbank](https://lmu.moveon4.de/publisher/1/deu "Link opens in a new window"). Select Faculty: *18-Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy* and Exchange Program: *ERASMUS Studies.*

Criteria that you should consider in order to find a suitable partner university:\

- Language skills
- Focus in research and teaching
- Start/end of semester
- Culture
- Costs

[What language skills are required for an application?](#accordionItem-1305407-2)

The language certificate must be for the main language of instruction in the host country:

- for English, level B2 knowledge is required
- for all other languages, knowledge of level B1 is required

The above-mentioned language levels can often be proven with the Abitur certificate. Since the partner universities do not recognize the Abitur certificate as proof of language proficiency, it is necessary to have the language level acquired with the Abitur certified on the basis of an internationally recognized language certificate. Please contact the [Sprachenzentrum der LMU](https://www.sprachenzentrum.uni-muenchen.de/sprachtests_und_mehr/sprachtests/index.html "Link opens in a new window").

If you are unable to provide the required language certificate with your Abitur certificate, you have the option of acquiring a DAAD language certificate. Further information can also be found on the website of the [Sprachenzentrum der LMU](https://www.sprachenzentrum.uni-muenchen.de/sprachtests_und_mehr/sprachtests/index.html "Link opens in a new window").

**In exceptional cases, however, universities (especially in the UK) require higher language certificates (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL)!** To be on the safe side, please also check the websites of the partner universities for the language levels currently required.

[How do I find out which language skills are required by my desired partner university?](#accordionItem-1305407-3)

In most cases, Bachelor's degree programs are taught in the home language of the host country. If the home language of the host country is not English, you will usually have to provide proof of language proficiency at B1 level.\
Many Master's degree programs are also offered in English in non-English-speaking countries. In this case, proof of English language skills at B2 level must be provided.

[In which language should the letter of motivation be written?](#accordionItem-1305407-4)

Usually in German. If German is not your native language, you can also write the letter of motivation in English.

[Do I have to submit a separate letter of motivation for each university of my choice?](#accordionItem-1305407-5)

You can specify up to four universities where you would like to spend your stay abroad in your application. In doing so, you prioritize which university you would like to go to first, second and so on. In your letter of motivation, you only need to mention the university to which you are applying with the highest priority (first choice). A separate letter of motivation for your second, third or fourth choice is not required.

[Is it possible to go abroad in the Bachelor's and Master's programs?](#accordionItem-1305407-6)

Yes, several stays abroad per study phase are possible via the ERASMUS program, both for studies and for internships. The stays per study phase (Bachelor, Master, PhD) may not exceed a total duration of 12 months. For state examination or diploma students, the maximum duration is extended to 24 months.

[Can I receive BAföG and Erasmus funding at the same time?](#accordionItem-1305407-7)

[Can Erasmus funding be combined with other scholarships?](#accordionItem-1305407-8)

If you receive another scholarship from the EU or the DAAD, you cannot receive an Erasmus scholarship. All other scholarships are compatible with the Erasmus scholarship. Find out whether your other scholarship provider will reduce the amount of your scholarship if you receive an Erasmus scholarship.

[What do I need to know about registering and enrolling at the partner university?](#accordionItem-1305407-9)

After you have successfully applied for an Erasmus study place at LMU, the Faculty of Physics will nominate you for an Erasmus study place at the corresponding partner university. Detailed information on applying to LMU can be found [here](https://www.lmu.de/de/workspace-fuer-studierende/auslandserfahrung-sammeln/auslandsstudium/austauschprogramme/erasmus/index.html "Link opens in a new window").

However, you are then responsible for enrolling or registering at the partner university yourself. Nomination by LMU is not sufficient to be considered enrollment, as each university has its own enrollment procedure for Erasmus students. Some partner universities use online registration and/or require additional documents from nominated students. The partner university will contact you a few months before your stay to give you information about the enrollment and registration procedure. Make sure that you meet the enrollment deadlines at the partner university.

[When and how do I fill out my Learning Agreement?](#accordionItem-1305407-10)

Once you have been accepted for an Erasmus place at LMU, you can start filling out your Learning Agreement. You can find detailed instructions above.
