## Studying at the Faculty of Geosciences

At the Faculty of Geosciences, degree programs are offered at both the [Department of Geography](https://www.geo.lmu.de/geographie/en/ "Link opens in a new window") and the [Department of Geosciences](https://www.geowissenschaften.uni-muenchen.de/index.html "Link opens in a new window").

The focus **of geography studies**  is on modern geographic methodology (geographic information systems, remote sensing, environmental modeling, statistics, empirical social research), integrative environmental and high mountain research, economic geography and environmental economics as well as the geography of urban areas.

The **geosciences courses**  deal with the Earth system from a scientific background. The materials that make up the earth (minerals, rocks) and the processes that take place on and in the earth (plate tectonics, volcanism, earthquakes, rock formation, development of life and the biosphere, formation of raw materials, spread of pollutants, etc.) are recorded, experimentally simulated and described using modern analysis and observation methods. Topics such as the conservation and sustainable use of resources, the use of materials, the assessment of hazards from natural disasters, the development of earth observation systems, the evolution of life and paleoclimate research play an important role. All degree programs at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences are joint degree programs of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and the Technische Universität München (TUM). These courses of study take place under the umbrella of the "Munich Geocenter".

## Peer-to-peer mentoring program

As part of this program, experienced students (mentors) provide support to less experienced students (mentees) of the same subject in their first year of study.\
In our additional project P2P Plus, our mentors have also been supporting LMU students with a refugee background since 2016.
