Cultivate your creativity.
\ The arts are an essential part of the first-year experience. Throughout the year, we support a number of artistic and hands-on creative workshops and events designed just for you. Past events have included clay workshops, tote bag decorating, open jam sessions, trips to local arts events and institutions, collaborations with the Harvard Art Museums, creative writing, and performing arts workshops of all kinds. First-year arts resources include:
- The First-Year Arts Roomnext to the Holworthy Common Room, is open to students for workshops and art-making nights. Be sure to review the guidelines for the use of the space and complete the user contract.
- First-Year Arts Board (FAB) is a voluntary, leadership position for students interested in the arts. Members of the FAB collaborate with the Coordinator of First-Year Arts Initiatives to plan new and strengthen existing arts opportunities. They create initiatives centered around rest and community building through the arts. You can apply to join the FAB in the fall.
- Music Practice Rooms are available in first-year dorms for vocal or instrumental practice. All of the eight practice rooms have pianos. First-year students have access to the online reservation system.
Additionally, the Office for the Arts (OFA) is Harvard College's central resource for arts opportunities across campus, and offers programming to all undergraduate students. Some of the arts initiatives they oversee include dance, theatre, music, and ceramics programs. They host ArtsBites luncheons, where you are able to engage with different artists, and they host a week-long festival, ARTS FEST, each spring.
If you have an idea for a program or have any questions, please contact the Coordinator of Arts Initiatives.
