The Department of the Classics encourages its students to explore the whole range of Greco-Roman civilization from the Bronze Age through Byzantium and medieval Europe to Modern Greece, and also to examine critically its various receptions, including those in contemporary America. Most of our concentrators pursue non-academic careers; a Classics concentration has proved rewarding for students who have gone on to careers in law, medicine, divinity, journalism, business, and the arts.
Undergraduates may incorporate study of the Classics into their academic program in several ways: as a Concentration (i.e., "major"), as a Joint Concentration (in Ancient History or with another field), as a Secondary Field (i.e., "minor"), or through a language citation in either Latin, Ancient Greek, or Modern Greek.
Outside the classroom, undergraduates may participate in student groups geared toward classics. The Harvard Classical Club, founded in 1885, is run by a group of Harvard undergraduates interested in the field. The club regularly hosts dinners for its members, organizes a yearly Certamen competition for middle- and high school students, puts on other events, including productions of ancient plays. Undergraduates can also work on Harvard's undergraduate classics journal, Persephone.

### Concentrations and Joint Concentrations
Students can follow one of two concentration tracks or pursue joint concentrations with Classics and an allied field.
### Secondary Field and Language Citations
Students can explore their interest in Greco-Roman antiquity and its reception through a Secondary Field or earn a language citation in Latin, ancient Greek, and/or modern Greek.
Students have many opportunities to study abroad, either through programs affiliated with Harvard College or external programs.
