History & Literature encourages students to take courses across a wide variety of departments and disciplines, so concentrators choose a field of study to ensure that their plan of study has coherence and depth. There are seven fields of study in the concentration, each focused on a different theme, period, or place in world history and literature:
-
In addition to the 8 courses required for each field, all concentrators complete 1 course that satisfies the Language Requirement and 5 History & Literature tutorials: (spring); (fall and spring); (fall and spring).
To allow plenty of time for academic advising and intellectual exploration, concentrators do not choose a field until the end of the sophomore year.
What is a Field of Study?
History & Literature’s field structure provides the intellectual scaffolding to ensure that your individualized plan of study has breadth as well as depth. The fields also foster a sense of community among concentrators studying similar themes, regions, and periods.
