04. 01.

Gwanghyewon, Korea’s first modern hospital, was founded as a royal hospital

Gwanghyewon, renamed as Chejungwon

1886

03. 29.

Chejungwon opened the first medical school in Korea and accepted their first 16 students.

1893

07. 16.

Dr. O. R. Avison became the head of Chejungwon

1894

Management of Chejungwon was transferred to the American North Presbyterian Missionary Church.

1899

04.

Dr. O.R. Avison opens Severance Union Medical College and Hospital

1904

09. 03.

Through a donation from Mr. L. H. Severance, the hospital was reconstructed and the medical education institution was finalized.

1908

06.

The first seven graduates received the first doctors’ licenses issued by the Korean government

07.

Chejungwon Medical School renamed Severance Medical College

1910

The nursing school within the Severance Hospital which was run as a professional institute to train outstanding nurses produced the first nurses in Korea

1913

6 denominations including the North Presbyterian Church, North Methodist Church and the Canadian Presbyterian Church joined together and renamed the school‘Private Severance Union Medical School.

Chosun Christian College established; first classes held at YMCA, first president Dr. H.G. Underwood, vice-presidentDr. O. R. Avison,

Dr. O. R. Avison was appointed the 2nd President of the Chosun Christian College.

1917

04. 07.

Chosun Christian College accredited as "Private Yonhi College."\ "Severance Union Medical College" (Humanities, Mathematics and Physics, Business, Agriculture and Theology) newly accredited.

05. 14.

The school developed into the Severance Union Medical College Foundation.

The current location of the main campus was purchased in 1917 through a generous donation from Mr. John T. Underwood
