Vision

The School of Integrated Technology at Yonsei University’s College of Computing was established in March 2011 as the Global School of Science and Engineering within the College of Engineering to cultivate interdisciplinary talent in cutting-edge fields for the sustainable development of humanity in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The school has fostered global, multidisciplinary leaders by integrating horizontal convergence in advanced fields such as information technology, electronics, computer science, and nanotechnology with vertical convergence encompassing the humanities, social sciences, arts, and design. Since 2023, it has been pioneering cutting-edge academic fields—including AI, intelligent semiconductors, future automobiles, next-generation communication networks, IoT convergence, quantum computing, aerospace systems, and nanotechnology—as part of the newly established Department of Integrated Information Technology within the College of Computing.\ With the government’s expansion of advanced education programs, the school will grow into the School of Integrated Technology in the 2025 academic year, with the addition of a new Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Technology and the reestablishment of the Department of Integrated Information Technology). This expansion continues the legacy of Korea’s first interdisciplinary undergraduate education in advanced fields. Both majors share a common core curriculum and systematically conduct education and research in semiconductors and IT convergence technologies. This synergistic approach manifests in collaborative education programs, research cooperation, close interactions between faculty and students, personalized and interdisciplinary research opportunities, and industry-academia collaboration projects that enhance students’ professional and practical capabilities.\ The Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Technology, set to launch at Yonsei University’s International Campus in Songdo, Incheon, benefits from its proximity to Incheon International Airport, facilitating global cooperation in education and research. The campus already hosts over 2,500 students from 66 countries, reflecting its highly internationalized educational environment. Moreover, Yonsei Science Park (YSP) on the International Campus is an innovation cluster formed in collaboration with the government and local authorities, integrating academia, research, industry, hospitals, and public institutions. The park fosters a sustainable innovation ecosystem, combining interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs, a research-driven clinical hospital, and an IT-biomedical innovation cluster to create a virtuous cycle of education, research, and innovation.\ A key highlight of this ecosystem is the IBM Quantum Computing Center, set to launch in mid-2024 as Korea’s first and the fifth of its kind worldwide. This center will spearhead research integrating traditional computing (CPU), AI computing (GPU), and quantum computing (QPU). Leveraging this ecosystem, the school will offer comprehensive semiconductor education spanning materials, fabrication, circuits, and systems. It will also develop next-generation intelligent hardware-software convergence platforms to cultivate experts capable of pioneering AI semiconductor technologies and system applications.

Research Areas

Yonsei University established the Global School of Science and Engineering under the ICT Excellent Talent Development Project (2010–2019) to introduce Korea’s first accelerated “3+4” academic system, enabling students to earn both bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees in just seven years. This system, successfully implemented since 2011, will be expanded in 2025 with the launch of the Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Technology and the restructuring of the Department of Integrated Information Technology within the School of Integrated Technology. With 14 years of expertise in this 3+4 academic system, the new major aims to attract top students to Ph.D. programs early and accelerate the training of high-level researchers in advanced fields.\ Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Technology are designed to overcome the limitations of the von Neumann architecture and data bottlenecks, incorporating advanced machine learning and deep learning capabilities to support AI computation, big data processing, and autonomous systems. Developing such cutting-edge technology requires an integrated approach across software, hardware, telecommunications, AI, and advanced platform applications. Sustainable fundamental scientific research and the training of innovative professionals in intelligent system semiconductors and IT convergence technologies are critical to meeting these demands.\ Overcoming traditional barriers between academic disciplines, the school fosters collaborative research and graduate-level specialization in intelligent semiconductors, ensuring graduates play a key role in Korea’s intelligent semiconductor industry. The Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Technology and Department of Integrated Information Technology share core educational foundations and advanced research programs in semiconductors, software, hardware, telecommunications, AI, and quantum computing, allowing for complementary interdisciplinary growth.\ For example, research teams work together in semiconductor device fabrication, intelligent semiconductor processors, and intelligent application platforms to drive cutting-edge developments in intelligent semiconductor technology.

Career Prospects

Since 2011, Yonsei University has successfully developed an interdisciplinary engineering education system, establishing world-class educational and research facilities while actively supporting students’ creative development and self-directed interdisciplinary research. This foundation has enabled most current students of the School of Integrated Technology (formerly IT Convergence Engineering) to complete their undergraduate studies in three years and seamlessly transition to graduate programs, where they receive scholarship support for interdisciplinary research. Graduates have excelled in a wide range of high-tech fields, including AI, intelligent semiconductors, future automobiles, next-generation telecommunications, IoT convergence, bio-health, and defense technology.\ Recently, Yonsei University established the “Graduate Program in Intelligent Semiconductor Technology,” integrating materials, devices, fabrication, design, computer architecture, AI, 6G telecommunications, and IoT into its graduate curriculum and research. This initiative ensures that graduates of the Department of Intelligent Semiconductor Technology will have extensive career opportunities in semiconductor-related industries, research institutions, and academia, both in Korea and internationally.
