World Christianity and Mission Studies

#### World Christianity and Mission Studies

The Mission Studies explore the missionary history of the church based on God's mission to this earth (Missio Dei) through Jesus Christ. In addition, Mission Studies pursue the original form of God's missionary work and study the various aspects of changes and propagation of Christianity in human history.

In particular, the existing missionary studies have explored the concept of missionary work so far focusing on Western Christianity (Christendom). However, a number of controversies have been constantly raised as it implicates colonial and imperial perspectives. Therefore, Mission Studies in modern society should not deal with missions from this western-oriented Christian perspective but reconsider its history in the new paradigm and framework of "World Christianity".

To this end, Mission Studies critically examine the existing missionary history in western-centered Christianity through postmodern and postcolonial discourse and try to reconstruct missionary work from a World Christianity perspective as an alternative to solve various problems which have been caused accordingly. In this respect, Christianity is not a western-oriented religion and it should be examined from the perspective of "World Christianity" in accordance with the rapidly increasing population of Christians in the global south. In other words, the purpose of Mission Studies is to recognize Christianity and missionary history not as an expanded one from the West but as the history of "change" and "interpretation" beginning from God's mission. Furthermore, based on this, Mission Studies are aimed at presenting missionary work as a history of "practice" and a "movement" for theological humanity, justice, and love.
