Vision
The School of Computing aims to nurture world-class leaders in the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, and AI systems. To achieve this, we seek to cultivate talents who will lead the human-centered AI era through interdisciplinary education and research. The department actively invites scholars from related fields to provide world-class education and conduct research in the core areas of computer science, artificial intelligence, and AI convergence. Additionally, we have pursued collaborations with leading domestic and international companies in response to the rapidly changing industrial landscape, and we will actively support entrepreneurship activities in cutting-edge fields within the university community.\ \ To support this vision, the College of Computing has established the School of Computing, integrating the existing Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Artificial Intelligence, and the newly created Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems. Beginning in 2025, incoming students will be admitted to the School as a single cohort and will select one of the three majors upon entering their second year. This structure allows students to explore their interests before choosing a field of study, enabling them to develop into professionals who are both highly specialized and adaptable in the rapidly evolving fields of computing and artificial intelligence.
The Establishment of the School of Computing
The establishment of the School of Computing was a strategic decision to maximize the synergy between the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Artificial Intelligence, and the newly established Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems, with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary convergent talent required for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. While each department already possesses excellent educational and research capabilities, integrating them into one would create even greater value. Therefore, we made the decision to establish the School of Computing. \ \ The Department of Computer Science and Engineering excels in fundamental computing theories and software development, while the Department of Artificial Intelligence demonstrates outstanding capabilities in AI algorithms and data analysis. The Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems focuses on developing the ability to implement these theoretical foundations into practical systems. The School of Computing, formed by integrating these three departments, will cross-list the educational programs of each, offering a curriculum that allows students to integrate and broaden their spectrum, from basic theories to implementation and applications. \ \ Through this approach, students will gain flexible mindsets that would enable them to learn by combining various technologies and areas of knowledge, rather than being limited to a single specific field. This is essential in cultivating talent capable of presenting creative and innovative solutions in an environment with rapidly changing technologies. In this way, the School of Computing will become the optimal cradle for producing talents with the comprehensive capabilities for leading the digital innovation in the 21st century.
Interdisciplinary Convergence Education
The School of Computing offers a curriculum in which three specialized majors are closely interconnected, enabling students to flexibly pursue second and third majors in addition to their primary major, chosen during their sophomore year. This educational program is designed to help students gain a broad knowledge across various subfields of computing and develop a multifaceted perspective. \ \ Furthermore, by leveraging the strengths of Yonsei University—the largest comprehensive university in Korea—students can benefit from interdisciplinary education and collaborative research with diverse academic fields (M.E.S.H.: Medicine, Engineering, financial Service, Humanity). These opportunities allow them to integrate advanced computing technologies with other disciplines, cultivate creative problem-solving skills, and grow into well-rounded, interdisciplinary talents prepared for the future.
Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure: AI Data Center
The School of Computing offers innovative education and research infrastructure through an AI data center equipped with state-of-the-art, high-performance GPUs. This cutting-edge facility provides a strong foundation for students to excel at the forefront of AI and computing. Students can gain hands-on experience in designing and implementing computer software, developing and validating creative AI models, and designing and constructing advanced AI systems. This AI infrastructure allows students to venture beyond theoretical learning, equipping students with practical skills essential for real-world applications. The AI infrastructure offers a solid foundation for the students to become leaders who would drive innovation in computing, artificial intelligence, and AI systems.
