The Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Joachim Ballmannn
who passed away on June 7, 2025 at the age of 45. With his passing, we have lost a highly esteemed colleague and university lecturer. He was an internationally recognized scientist at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, where he headed the structural chemistry department and a research group in the field of coordination chemistry. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts for his great commitment, dedication and loyalty. The faculty will honor Joachim Ballmann's memory. The Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences teaches and conducts research in the fields of chemistry, geography and earth sciences.

Study
The Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences offers Bachelor and Master training programmes in the subjects of chemistry, geography and earth sciences. The Biochemistry degree programme is offered jointly with the Faculty of Biosciences and the Master's degree programme in Geoarchaeology is offered jointly with the Faculty of Arts.

Doctorate
The doctorate demonstrates the ability to conduct independent scientific research. A doctorate at the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences is possible in the subjects of Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Geography. Depending on the field of research, it can be completed with the academic degree of Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.), Doctor der Ingenieurwissenschaften (Dr.-Ing.) or, in the field of Geography, Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.).
