A doctorate is the highest academic degree that a university can award and certainly a challenging experience for aspiring young scientists. Over the years, numerous PhD students have successfully completed such a degree at BioQuant Research Center. Many of these students benefited from participating in structured PhD programs that have emerged in recent years and are now mandatory open for to all PhD students at the Faculty of Biosciences at Heidelberg University.

PhD students at BioQuant are welcome to join the structured PhD program "Computational Analysis and Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems (COLuMBuS)", which is based at BioQuant and was developed specifically to meet the needs of PhD students in the field of quantitative biology.\ COLuMBuS is certified by the Faculty of Biosciences at Heidelberg University and offers PhD students access to comprehensive training in quantitative biology and soft skills as well as intensive supervision by a thesis advisory committee (TAC).\ BioQuant’s PhD students can choose COLuMBuS as their sole PhD program or can become members of COLuMBuS in addition to participating in other existing Heidelberg PhD programs (HBIGS, HGS MathComp, DKFZ HIGS etc.).

Steps to enroll with the faculty of bioscience

  1. Talk to your supervisor
  2. When enrolling with the faculty of biosciences, assemble the necessary documents.
  3. As a structured program, select COLuMBuS.
  4. Let the coordinator of COLuMBuS know about your intention.
  5. You will get the "blue sheet" from the PhD office which lists all requirements of the program. Here you can find a copy for your information.
  6. The blue sheet has to be filled in during your time as a PhD candidate and in the end signed by one of the coordinators of COLuMBuS.
