Technische Universität Berlin is a big university. It is located in the middle of Berlin.\
\
The full name Technische Universität Berlin is long. This is why we usually say **TU Berlin**. The letters T and U are spoken separately. Like this: Tee You Berlin. The letter T is short for the German word Technische, which means technical. The U stands for Universität, which is German for university.

TU Berlin is like a school. But it is a school for adults and not children and youths. We call these adults **students.** And we say that they **study** and not learn.
There are approximately 34 thousand students at TU Berlin. That’s a lot!
You can study many different things at TU Berlin. For example, math or physics. Or something to do with technology or computers. But there are many other things you can study. There are about 100 subjects. At TU Berlin, most subjects are related to technology. And numbers. This is why the university is also called a university of **technology.**
Students usually study here for 3 to 5 years. At the end they get a degree. For example, a bachelor’s or a master’s. With their degree, they can start a career.

But TU Berlin is not only a school. It is also a place where people do research. Research means to discover new things. The people who do this work are called **researchers**. There are more than 3 thousand researchers at TU Berlin. They ask questions and try to find answers. To do this, they do experiments and try new things. This is why they often discover new things. It is like detective work. They also read a lot of clever books. They also write clever books. Their discoveries often help people in the world.\
\
For example: A professor and his team built a ship. You can use the ship to transport heavy things. On a river. The ship is powered by batteries and hydrogen. This is much better than the diesel usually used for ships. The ship is very quiet. The rechargeable batteries also make it environmentally friendly. If we build more ships like this, it will be good for nature. And for us.
Researchers are also teachers. They teach students. This is how they share their knowledge.

There are 5 words at the top of the page. They are next to each other. We call these words the menu. The menu on the TU Berlin website looks like this:

- ABOUT
If you click on one of these words, a light gray box opens. This contains other words. You can click on any of these words. This takes you to a page with more information. For example, if you click first on **STUDYING** and then on **All Programs Offered**, you will find a list of the subjects people can study.
You can view the website on a big screen. Or on a cell phone. On a big screen, it looks like in the first picture.
If you go down the page (scroll), the menu disappears behind three horizontal lines. You can also click on these lines. This will show you the menu again. But this time with the words below each other.
The menu always looks like this on a cell phone. Because there is less space on the screen.

\
Faculties and central institutes are part of TU Berlin. They are at every university.
There are 8 at TU Berlin. They focus on specific topics. For example, mathematics. Or electrical engineering only. The topics are separated so everything does not get mixed up. Things are organized by topic.\
People work and study at the faculties.
This is an additional menu. You can use it to quickly access the faculties. They also have websites with information. They are part of TU Berlin.
This is how to search for something on the website: At the very top of the page is a white field. In this field you can see a magnifying glass. You have to type something in this field. It could be one word or more than one word. This is called a search term. Then you have to click on the magnifying glass.
You will then see a list of pages from the website. Only pages where your search term appears. But you will see other things too. These include:
- Files where the search term appears.
- News items where the search term appears.
- Events where the search term is used.
- The subjects that people can study. We also call them degree programs.
- People who have the same name as the search term.
