When, on 11 March 2021, a 500-meter slope in an open-pit, brown-coal mine in Saxony, Germany – decommissioned since 1945 – collapsed and caused a 1.5-meter-high flash flood, Johannes Hanigk sat up and took notice. Using spectral induced polarization (SIP), the student at the Chair of Applied Geophysics employs special equipment to investigate this very phenomenon of open-pit landslides caused by rising groundwater.
