Technische Universität Berlin looks back on a long history with numerous predecessor institutions. The Königliche Bergakademie zu Berlin was founded in 1770, followed by the Königliche Bauakademie zu Berlin in 1799, and the Königliche Gewerbeakademie zu Berlin in 1821. The Königlich Technische Hochschule zu Berlin (Royal Technical Academy) came into being in 1879 through a merger of the Royal Trade and Building Academies. However, the founding date of the University as we know it today is 9 April 1946. In an effort to clearly document its break with its National Socialist past, this date marked a new beginning rather than a re-opening for the University: The Technische Hochschule became Technische Universität Berlin.

The history of Technische Universität Berlin was shaped by major turning points and highlights but also by those who pioneered science and the development of the University. A portrait series brings the “leading minds” of Technische Hochschule and Technische Universität Berlin to life. The Catalogus Professorum, a project of the Technische Universität Berlin University Archives, documents the work of the University’s professors, lecturers, and officials. References to these notable scientists - in the form of monuments and artwork - can be found in many places on today’s campus.
