Enrolling in Doctoral Studies

If you are interested in enrolling in doctoral studies, you must first submit proof that your declaration of intent to pursue a doctorate has been accepted by the relevant faculty at TU Berlin. This means you must first submit the declaration of intent to the faculty service center of the relevant faculty (see contact details below). The faculty board will then inform you whether you have been admitted as a doctoral candidate and of any conditions of your admission. The TU Berlin Doctoral Regulations require all doctoral candidates not employed at TU Berlin to enroll as doctoral students.

General information about doctoral studies can be found on the webpages of t he Center for Junior Scholars (CJS).

Registration and enrollment are bound to the following deadlines:

Registration deadline (see step 1): \ for the summer semester 15.01. until 31.08. \ for the winter semester 15.07. until 28.02.\ \ \ Enrollment deadline (see step 2):\ for the summer semester 23.09. \ for the winter semester 23.03.\

Declaration of intent to pursue a doctorate:

To enroll you must have received the faculty board decision confirming the faculty’s acceptance of your declaration of intent to pursue a doctorate and stating whether you will be completing your doctorate in English or German.

Your enrollment can only be processed if both step 1 and step 2 have been completed!

Please take note of the following requirements when uploading the requested documents to the TU-Portal (tuPORT):

Please note that TU Berlin reserves the right to request the original documents or authenticated copies of your uploaded documents at random or in cases of reasonable doubt.

Comment regarding data privacy: Please mark your personal document (ID) as a copy. You can black out all unnecessary data. Relevant data are your full name and your date of birth. You can find further information regarding data privacy on our website.

  2. passport (page showing personal data) or german or national ID card with european citizenship (front and back)\
  3. A residence title is not sufficient.\
  4. Proof of receipt of the declaration of intent to pursue a doctorate\
  5. which has been accepted by the relevant faculty (faculty board decision) and which states whether you will be completing your doctorate in English or German\
  6. Degree certificate that enables you to pursue your doctoral studies\
  7. Current certificate of enrollment or certificate of termination of enrollment from previous university attended in Germany which states the university semesters, degree semesters and any leave of absence\
  8. only required if you were ever enrolled at a German university\
  9. if this is your first enrollment at a German university, you do not have to upload any document at this point or you can use our standard certificate\
  10. We absolutely need the information about the university semesters and leave of absence! If this information is missing on your certificate, you can have your university fill out our certificate and upload it in addition to your certificate. Possibly, this information is listed on the certificate of study history, the master data sheet, data control sheet, performance record according to examination regulations or the certificate according to §9 BAföG.\

What do I need to consider when completing the online-application to enrollment?

Please click on “Save” after each section to ensure that your data is properly saved.  The transcripts (e.g. Master’s degree) as well as the university entrance qualification certificate should be saved right after you enter your data by clicking on “Save” on the left side below the fields you have filled in.

Can the online-application to enrollment be saved while being filled out?

As long as the application has not been submitted, it can be saved, edited and/or completed.

Is it possible to modify an online-application to enrollment that has been submitted?

No, a submitted application can no longer be modified.

In case there are any spelling mistakes in names and/or the address, you can have them corrected after enrollment by sending a request in the TU-Portal (tuPORT).

If you provided wrong information relevant to data in the application, the only way to correct it is to withdraw your application and to submit a new one. This is only possible within the registration deadline.

Can I withdraw my online-application to enrollment?

If you wish to withdraw your online-application to enrollment, please send us an e-mail to the following address: cancel.master(at)studsek.tu-berlin.de. Your should at least include the following information and attachments to your e-mail:

Can I withdraw my enrollment?

No, once you have been enrolled you need to terminate your enrollent via your TU-Portal (tuPORT).

I have a scholarship. What do I have to do?

If you have a scholarship, please send a proof of it via e-mail: Master(at)r1a.tu-berlin.de Be sure to provide your full name as well as your TUB-ID / matriculation number.

Information regarding your re-registration to the following semester as a PhD student will be send by e-mail to your e-mail account of TU Berlin.

PhD students are not exmatriculated ex officio due to their successful final examination or a failed final examination.

If you have successfully completed your degree, please apply for Exmatriculation upon request via your TU-Portal (tuPORT). Please note: The completion of your doctoral studies has to be proven with evidence. Otherwise the reason for exmatriculation will be irrevocably set to “Other”.
