Academic Practice MEd: Online distance learning

Design your SoTL Enquiry EDUC5991

Short Description

This course aims to provide skills and strategies to design an appropriate SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) enquiry, and covers methodologies, methods, and ethics in educational research.

Timetable

20 contact hours delivered through online pedagogies, which may include for instance webinars and vidcasts.

Online activities do not have to be undertaken on a specific day but are more usually required to be completed within a specified length of time.

Assessment

5-10 minutes digital oral presentation pitching your proposed educational enquiry to a notional funding body (ILO1, 50%)

Pro-forma ethics application, incorporating methodology and methods (ILOs 2, 3 and 4, 50%).

Course Aims

This course aims to enable the learners to design a substantial SoTL enquiry. It offers the opportunity to either focus on practitioner enquiry or research, depending on participants' interest and choice of topic. Building on previous experience with scholarship the learner should develop a more in-depth knowledge of methodologies, methods, and ethics for their enquiries. During the course participants will explore the differences between practitioner enquiry and educational research, and should develop more in-depth understanding of education research approaches.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course you should be able to:

1: Communicate a rationale for a specific SoTL enquiry;

2: Critically engage with methodology and methods in SoTL; 

3: Critically evaluate theoretical frameworks for SoTL; and

4: Critically reflect on ethical implications of your SoTL enquiry

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
