Students at University of Oslo’s international partner institutions may apply to become bilateral exchange students (bachelor or master level) for one or two semesters.

Nomination and application

Students from universities which have bilateral exchange agreements with UiO must contact the international office at their home institution to ask about possibilities. You have to apply through your home university. Local procedures and deadlines will vary according to each institution.

Deadlines

Nominated students must complete the application online well before:

Letters of Admission will be available online for students with complete applications in the middle of May for the autumn semester and in late October for the spring semester.

Courses in English

Bilateral students at the University of Oslo may choose from a wide range of courses offered in English.

The course descriptions give detailed information about each course; course content, teaching semester, the syllabus, examination form, and more. The list will be fully updated with details (teaching hours, syllabus, exam dates, etc.) in late November for courses in spring and late May for courses in autumn.

Exchange students at UiO may take courses across faculties and levels, depending on their background and the availability of the courses in question. Questions regarding courses must be directed to the relevant faculty or department.

See our website for further information and contact points for course questions: Courses and documents for exchange students

Norwegian language courses

Bilateral students at the University of Oslo may apply for Norwegian language courses on foundation and advanced level:

Norwegian Language Courses at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies. The credit value of these courses may be incorporated into a degree, if the courses are recognized by your home institution.

• Intensive Norwegian Language Courses in the summer, offered through the International Summer School (ISS) at the University of Oslo. For further information, see The International Summer School (ISS)

• Free online, four-week, introductory foreign language course: Free online course: Introduction to Norwegian (MOOC)

Residence permit

For further information about visa and student residence permit procedures, please see website about residence permit.

Student housing, arrival and orientation

Students must apply for student housing before 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 November for the spring semester to be prioritised. We advise students to apply as early as possible to be prioritised for housing in one of the SiO student residences.

Exchange students should arrive in Oslo the week before the start of the semester to ensure that they will be present for the orientation for new students. Please also see the academic calendar.

Most questions regarding practical issues are answered on our website for new international students.
