Be aware that it can be difficult to obtain a part-time job in order to supplement your budget. There are a limited amount of jobs available for students without knowledge of Norwegian.
If you want to work while studying in Norway, different rules applies to you as a student depending on your citizenship. [Read more about what you must do](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/foreign/international-students/) when you come to Norway to study and maybe work (skatteetaten.no). See also [Work in Norway – The Official Guide](https://www.workinnorway.no/en/Home).
## EU/EEA citizens
- You do not need a work permit
- You can start to work and study in Norway from day one
- As an EU/EEA student you must [register with the police within 3 months](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/policeregistration-eu.html) after arrival in Norway.
## Non-EU/EEA citizens
- You can work up to **20 hours pr week**during your first year of study.
- You can work full-time during the holidays.
- The part-time work permit has the same duration as the study permit.
- Part-time work permit as a student only allows you to be an employee. You are therefore not allowed to set up your own business (sole proprietorship - enkeltmannsforetak) while you are on a student permit.
### Renewal of part-time work permit
- When [renewing the study permit](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/while-in-oslo/renewal-residence-permit.html), the part-time work permit is **not**automatically renewed.
- You must document satisfactory progress in your studies in order to continue to work part-time.
## Tax deduction card
If you get a part-time job, you will need to [apply for a tax deduction card with the Tax Administration](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/foreign/are-you-intending-to-work-in-norway/).
