# Residence permit and police registration

There are different rules regarding documentation, how to apply for residence permit and how to register with the police, depending on your citizenship. Please choose the appropriate category below to find information relevant to you.

## Non EU/EEA citizens

## EU/EEA citizens

Students from EU/EEA do not need to apply for residence permit for studies.

## Dual citizenship

Students with dual citizenship (EU passport and non-EU passport) must either:

- Register with the police as an EU/EEA citizen and show documentation of [European Health Insurance Card](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/on-arrival/health-insurance/) (or proof of other private health insurance coverage) ***or***
- Apply for residence permit as a [non-EU/EEA citizen](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/before-arrival/visa/non-eu-eea/) and apply for voluntary membership in the [National Insurance Scheme](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/on-arrival/health-insurance/).
