# Registration with the police for EU/EEA citizens

Students with EU/EEA citizenship need to register with the Oslo Police within 3 months after arrival in Norway. Only applicable for students staying in Norway for more than 3 months.

## Information about appointments with the police

You must wait until you have arrived in Oslo to register an application online [with the UDI](https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/residence-under-the-eueeu-regulations/student-who-are-eueea-national/) and book an appointment with the police.

Unfortunately, there are currently few appointments available at the Oslo Police Department. New appointments will be posted on the UDI portal on an ongoing basis.

**We therefore recommend that you book the first available appointment with the police, even if it is more than 3 months after your arrival.**

Please note that you can start your studies and stay in Norway, even if you have not been able to meet with the police.

**If you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months**, you may report Move to Norway before your appointment with the police. [Please contact the Tax Administration](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/foreign/international-students/) for more information.

If there are no appointments available, please log onregularly to see if any new appointments have been posted. UiO will update our web page and inform students if we receive further information about available appointments from the police.

Please note that **Nordic** citizens do not have to register with the Police.

## How to register with the police

In order to receive a registration certificate from the Oslo Police you must register with the police. Students must book an appointment with the police through the UDI web page.

**You must first register an application with the police through the [UDI web page](https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/residence-under-the-eueeu-regulations/student-who-are-eueea-national/).**

Register online [with the UDI](https://www.udi.no/en/want-to-apply/residence-under-the-eueeu-regulations/student-who-are-eueea-national/):

- Fill in your country and choose Oslo as your municipality.
- Choose "Go to the application form".
- Create a new user account. You will receive an email  with a verification code to activate your account.
- Fill in your current Oslo address
- When you are asked to choose a police station select "A SUA office" and choose "Oslo Politidistrikt, Servicesenteret for utenlandske arbeidstakere (SUA)".
- Make a copy of:
  - Passport or both sides of your National ID-card
  - Both sides of the European Health Insurance Card **or**proof of other private health insurance coverage. **It must be valid for the whole period you are staying in Norway.**
  - Admission letter (can be found in Studentweb under "Documents").
  - A personal [declaration that you have sufficient funds](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/declaration-of-funds.pdf) for your period of stay.
  - We recommend that you bring a print-out of from UDI's portal that proves that you have registered an application.
- The police require that your documents must be in English or Norwegian, or translated into English or Norwegian.
- Degree students with conditional admission can also be requested to show [Confirmation of student status](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/registrations/confirmation/) (can be ordered from Studentweb)

## Register move to Norway

[EU/EEA citizens who are going to stay in Norway for more than 6 months](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/foreign/international-students/) must report a move to Norway. If your report of move is approved you will receive a national identity number.

If you are going to be a student for 2 semesters or more you can book an appointment with the Tax Administration at [SUA - Service centre for foreign workers](https://www.sua.no/en/), even if you have not had an appointment with the police.

In addition to the documents that must be handed in to the police, please also bring:

- Tenancy contract
- Semester card
- Completed form [RF-1401 Notification of a move to Norway](https://www.skatteetaten.no/globalassets/skjema/alltid/rf1401_2020e_kodet.pdf)

## Dual citizenship

Students with dual citizenship (EU passport and non-EU passport) must register with the police either:

- as an EU/EEA citizen and show documentation of [European Health Insurance Card](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/on-arrival/health-insurance/index.html) (or proof of other private health insurance coverage) **or**
- apply for residence permit as a [non-EU/EEA citizen](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/before-arrival/visa/non-eu-eea/index.html) and apply for voluntary membership in the [National Insurance Scheme](https://www.uio.no/english/studies/international-students/on-arrival/health-insurance/index.html).
