Part-time work and work permit

Be aware that it can be difficult to obtain a part-time job in order to supplement your budget. There are a limited amount of jobs available for students without knowledge of Norwegian.
If you want to work while studying in Norway, different rules applies to you as a student depending on your citizenship. Read more about what you must do when you come to Norway to study and maybe work (skatteetaten.no). See also Work in Norway – The Official Guide.
EU/EEA citizens
- You do not need a work permit
- You can start to work and study in Norway from day one
- As an EU/EEA student you must register with the police within 3 months after arrival in Norway.
Non-EU/EEA citizens
- You can work up to 20 hours pr weekduring your first year of study.
- You can work full-time during the holidays.
- The part-time work permit has the same duration as the study permit.
- Part-time work permit as a student only allows you to be an employee. You are therefore not allowed to set up your own business (sole proprietorship - enkeltmannsforetak) while you are on a student permit.
Renewal of part-time work permit
- When renewing the study permit, the part-time work permit is notautomatically renewed.
- You must document satisfactory progress in your studies in order to continue to work part-time.
Tax deduction card
If you get a part-time job, you will need to apply for a tax deduction card with the Tax Administration.
