The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is consistently ranked among the world’s best universities in global rankings. It is a top 100 university in the Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings.

• US News Best Global Universities

• The UvA is ranked among the top 5 best universities in Europe in the US News rankings of Best Global Universities 2024-2025, ranks 1st in the Netherlands and 33rd worldwide.

US News Best Global Universities in Europe - QS World University Rankings

• The UvA is ranked 53rd in the 2026 QS World University Rankings. The UvA is one of two Dutch universities in the top 100.
• The QS World University Rankings are compiled based on six criteria: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), student to faculty ration (20%), international faculty (5%) and international students (5%).

### QS World Rankings by Subject

• In the 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject the UvA was listed as number one in the world for Communication Science and Media Studies for the 8th year in a row.
• Dentistry (a joint UvA-VU programme) is ranked 3 globally.
• UvA also ranks top 20 in Geography, Psychology and Anthropology.

• The University of Amsterdam is ranked 62ndin the 2025 THE World University Ranking.

THE World University Rankings - Shanghai Ranking: Academic Ranking of World Universities

• As in previous years, the UvA is listed in the 101-150 group in the 2025 worldwide top-500 ARWU ranking.
• In the 2025 ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the UvA is ranked in first place globally in the field of Communication.
• Other UvA disciplines with high rankings include Psychology (10) and Law (22).

The meaning of rankings

In recent years, criticism of rankings within the Netherlands seems to have increased, especially with regard to the methodology. At the same time, international rankings remain a yardstick for many people when choosing a particular university, as a student or as a prospective employer. A high position in rankings is not a goal for the UvA. Our goal is high-quality education and research.

Our position in the international rankings can be seen as a reflection of the quality, but that of course depends on what a specific ranking measures. Rankings never provide a complete or objective picture. Each ranking looks at different indicators (or a combination thereof). Most rankings contain indicators for research output. A number of rankings, for example those of QS and THE, also include reputation and education-related indicators in the methodology.
