Research that lacks integrity harms those involved and undermines trust in science. At the UvA, we therefore adhere to the principles of academic integrity: honesty, diligence, transparency and accountability.

## Codes of conduct for research integrity

We aim to create an environment in which good research practices are encouraged, and in which people feel free to take responsibility, discuss dilemmas and report mistakes safely.

At the UvA, both the [Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity](https://www.nwo.nl/en/netherlands-code-of-conduct-for-research-integrity) and the [European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity](https://allea.org/code-of-conduct/) apply. These outline the principles and standards for integrity in research and teaching.

To ensure these codes are implemented effectively, each [faculty](https://www.uva.nl/en/about-the-uva/organisation/faculties/faculties.html) has additional policies and ethics committees in place.

## Complaints procedure

The [Academic Integrity Complaints Regulations](https://www.uva.nl/en/about-the-uva/policy-and-regulations/research/academic-integrity-complaints-regulations.html)sets out what constitutes a breach of scientific integrity and explains the process for submitting a complaint.

If staff suspect a breach of integrity, they can contact the [confidential advisers for scientific integrity](https://www.uva.nl/en/content/a-z/confidential-advisers/confidential-advisers.html). These advisers can help mediate or support efforts to resolve the issue in another way. If this is not possible, staff may [submit a formal complaint to the Scientific Integrity Committee](https://www.uva.nl/en/research/research-environment/academic-integrity/submitting-a-complaint-about-a-breach-of-academic-integrity/submitting-a-complaint-about-a-breach-of-academic-integrity.html). The confidential adviser can provide guidance in this process.
