Health insurance is mandatory for the duration of your stay in the Netherlands. Liability insurance is strongly recommended and in some cases required.
## Health insurance
All international students are **required** by law to have appropriate health insurance for the duration of their stay in the Netherlands. Please check before you come to the Netherlands whether your insurance will cover the **complete period** of your stay abroad, and what type of coverage it consists of.
### Special student deals
As a student at the University of Amsterdam, you can make use of the special student dealsthat some health care providers offer.
### Risk of penalty
If you do not take out health insurance, you **risk having to pay a penalty** of around 130% of the nominal premium for each month that you are uninsured, plus a fine of around €400 if you do not pay on time.
## Liability insurance
You are strongly advised to take out appropriate general third-party insurance (liability insurance). Liability insurance is mandatory for non-EEA/EU students requesting a [residence permit through the UvA](https://www.uva.nl/en/education/practical-information/visas-and-permits/visas-and-permits.html).
