Stress: everyone experiences it from time to time, but we all know too much stress is harmful and can lead to burnout. What does science say about the causes of stress? And what can we do about it – individually and as a society?
Why do we feel stress? And when is it too much?
A healthy amount of stress helps you stay sharp, but it can also make you sick and can eventually even affect your memory. To better understand stress and its impact, UvA researchers are investigating the neurobiological mechanisms of stress, as well as other factors such as the impact that your environment and lifestyle.
Work, stress and burn-out
What are the effects of stress in the workplace? UvA research reveals these findings.
- The number of people struggling with mental health issues, such as burnout and stress, is higher than ever. Can we learn something from entrepreneurs?
- Sick leave, reduced income, therapy – the costs of burnout can quickly add up. But who should be footing the bill?
- PhD candidates are under immense pressure, while their career prospects remain uncertain. It’s hardly surprising, then, that they experience mental health issues far more often than the general population.
