Since its establishment in 1632, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has maintained a close relationship with the city. The UvA’s four campuses are a vibrant part of Amsterdam. The University also collaborates with local entrepreneurs, social organisations, museums, residents and the municipal authorities to help find solutions to challenges facing the city.

## Science in the city

The UvA employs around 3,000 researchers, each of whom contributes their own expertise through innovative and independent research. Meet seven researchers who focus specifically on urban issues. From bird behaviour to an AI-driven solution for waste collection – all are conducting research and launching initiatives to improve quality of life in the city.

UvA researchers Sukel and Rudinac developed AI software that detects waste to help keep the city clean.

UvA researcher Meredith Glaser studies how to keep cycling enjoyable in Amsterdam.

Prof. Sennay Ghebreab studies how AI can contribute to inclusive public transport for all.

Everyone has the right to healthy food. UvA Prof. Anniek de Ruijter examines how this principle applies to the food available on Amsterdam’s streets.

The Sisters in Science are making science accessible for future generations.

UvA historian Tim Verlaan studies what lessons can be learned from the housing history of Amsterdam’s residents.

UvA researcher Judy Shamoun-Baranes explores how Amsterdam’s residents can better coexist with the birds in our city.
